Reviews of Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Chicago
"Went here last Wednesday to apply for L-Visa. Arrived around 11-12am and it was empty, super relaxing. I collected all my documents, and it was extremely efficient. Printed out copies of all documents requirements (drivers license, cova form, where you will stay form, bio page passport, and copy of photo just in case). It makes your life easier being extra prepared. As long as you have all required documents, the application is easy and simple. They gave me a pink slip and told me to come back 5 days. Process took me 5minutes Came back Today, parked at the garages near by (i use spothero for finding parking garages). Came around 10:30am and was not very busy. I waited in line, gave them my pink slip and paid (you can use mastercard, visa. Debit or credit card). They gave me my passport with my Visa, and I was done! I was there for less than 5minutes, really efficient and very well done. Very impressed! 5 stars! Cant wait to visit China now :) 谢谢啊!"
"Hours online are inaccurate, the office doesn’t actually open until 9:30. I arrived at about 8:55 and there were a few people ahead of me already waiting in line. They let people sign in and head up to the 5th floor about 9:25. Other than that, everyone in the office was friendly and polite."
""You must apply in person for a visa..." In fact, there is an agency that will handle the entire process for you for about $600. I paid $300 (including the $140 visa fee) to have them Fedex my passport & visa back to Colorado, to avoid waiting in Chicago for 3-6 days. Company name is Swift Passport and Visa Services, located on the 5th floor, down the hall from the embassy (there are other agencies offering the same services, but probably not as conveniently located). Wish I'd known before I flew to Chicago in a snowstorm."
"Arrive between 8:15-8:30, line up in the 1st floor lobby. Less people than expected. Visa office on 5th floor opens at 9. We are allowed to go upstairs at 8:55. Get number from security guard after security check. There are six windows open , maybe not all have staff at all time. When they call your number, they work efficiently and answer questions. If you have all the required documents, make sure carefully check their website for detail requirement, it wont take long to complete the process, better bring extra copy for ID, certificate, original documents, save time . Then they give A pink slips for pick up visa after 3-5 business. No paper photo is required if you successfully submitted digital photo online when fill out COVA. Even for children first time apply. I completed the process within one hour and leave, only because I have 3 applications and all first time, take a little bit longer. At 10am, nobody needs to line up by the door anymore, all sitting in the waiting room, still have chairs, not full yet. There is copy machine, 25cent A copy (bring coins, the machine may not take in paper bills sometime). Instant photo shot for visa, computer as well which I didn't need to use."
"I went there twice in early September (2023), and the service was good both times. The first time, I had to wait maybe 40 minutes, if that. The man at the counter was kind and patient. When I returned the following week to pick up my passport, I was in and out in five minutes. The second man who helped me was also polite. The non-Chinese security guard was the only unprofessional one there, slouching and surfing the internet like an obnoxious phone zombie. Homeboy couldn't even be bothered to look customers in the eye."
