Dr. Lauren Maloney 3504 Vann Road, Birmingham, AL 35235

"I took my son in to Dr Maloney seeking help for him when he was 14. She told me that because he was 14, he had full confidentiality, and that children 14 and up are treated as adults in therapy. He saw her for a couple of years and more than once, I caught on to the fact that he was manipulating her. I tried to reach out to her, sent her emails to discuss his issues, to which I would get maybe a 2 word reply. She would not discuss anything with me or allow me any input. More than once, he left an appointment with her saying she recommended the psychiatrist increase his benzodiazepines that he took for anxiety. She even called me in to her office and suggested this may be a good idea when he told her I didn’t want his meds increased, even though she never discussed anything else with me. My son had developed an addiction to the medications his psychiatrist had him on, and was abusing them. He wound up hospitalized for 2 weeks, then spent 30 days in an adolescent rehab facility. At the point I had him hospitalized, I quit taking him to Dr. Maloney, as she had only enabled him. The psych doctors at the hospital and rehab were appalled at the medication he had been prescribed, and I think of the times she tried to convince me that he needed it increased, because he went in and convinced her so easily that he had debilitating anxiety. She never fact checked anything, she just took the word of a troubled child. None of the therapists that he saw in the hospital, at rehab, or his current therapist have treated me the way Dr. Maloney did, not listening to my concerns or allowing me to be an active part of his treatment. They all listened to me and relied on my word to be a help to them in his therapy. I would not suggest anyone take an older child to Dr. Maloney. To this day, it makes me angry to think about and I cannot understand how a professional with a doctorate could be so easily talked into suggesting powerful and addictive drugs to a child. My son is now recovered and thriving, thanks to all of the wonderful people who worked with us and helped him to overcome his addictions and to deal with his anxiety in a healthier manner."
