Reviews of Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Shelby County
"Sepsis landed my dad in the ICU mid-December. He finally was sent to a skilled nursing facility for rehab where he continued to rapidly decline. My sister and BIL finally just brought him home as we knew any further decline would render him incapable of being cared for at home, and that meant ever again. He wasn’t home an hour before being sent him to the ER with dangerously low oxygen levels: Another UTI and a blood infection. He continued to decline to where he no longer had ANY mobility. On a hoyer lift and unable to support himself in an upright sitting position, unable to even stand much less walk or assist in any way with transfers, feeding and care, we knew that the only hope of him ever coming home again was to get into an aggressive inpatient rehabilitation facility, and we already knew how hard it was to get insurance to approve someone in his state for a place aggressive enough to help him, but we knew exactly where to call. We wouldn’t want any of our loved ones to go anywhere else. Ever. From our initial request for admission up until his discharge, and beyond with daily calls from his case mgr., Kim, we have been treated with nothing but the utmost respect, compassion and care. Portia worked tirelessly with the hospital to get him qualified for acceptance, and we were amazed and thrilled when we got the word! She also kept us informed throughout the process which was most appreciated. He arrived ambulatory, weak as a kitten and completely “dead weight.” He was scared that he couldn’t withstand the three hours of therapy, but the therapists, Payton, Kayla and Jacqueline were phenomenal, and he quickly started to make progress, albeit at a slow pace due to his weakened condition and having been completely bed bound for so long. They persevered, keeping him motivated and pushing him to make every minute count. He was tired, but he made it through 3 hours of hard therapy every single day. His knees and his spinal stenosis caused him to be in a great deal of pain which complicated an already difficult plan of recovery, but the doctors were ON IT and got his pain under control quickly. The nurses were top notch too, and frankly, every member of the staff treated my dad with great skill and understanding. Connie provided comfort and relief and performed tasks that frankly, I would have found difficult to do for my own child. She, Kelly and Mindy and everyone else went over and beyond the call of duty. Audrey was a delight, and Tim and Blake always came running and always had answers. Another setback occured when it became evident he was getting sick. Dr. Avsar immediately ordered a urinalysis which confirmed yet another UTI! He prescribed an antibiotic which thankfully, started working very quickly, and still, remarkably, not one day of therapy was missed! Even the food which was so vital not only for energy but for his ability to heal was delicious and satisfying. Another complication was that he arrived with bed sores and open leg ulcers and wounds. Susan, the wound care nurse and the techs and nurses carefully tended to all of his injuries properly and diligently. In 12 short days, some had healed, and NONE of them progressed. The facility, located by Oak Mountain State Park, is lovely provides a very serene environment conducive to healing. There is a view from basically every patient room, and there are only 34, all private and spacious. We were able to take him outside to the pavilion on a particularly gorgeous day, and the facility has sidewalks for walking and rolling. He is home and doing GREAT thanks to Encompass Shelby County."
"I love this hospital and I have never seen a more caring team of professionals than the ones here! I have watched everyone there go the extra mile to take care of people. Highly recommend!!"
"Our experience was HORRIFIC. I only gave them 1 because 0 is not available. My husband is back in hospital because of their negligence. DO NOT USE ENCOMPASS if you care about your health!"
"I will NEVER refer this place to ANYONE!! The whole staff was incompetent and did NOT follow my Doctor's orders (they had me doing exercises I wasn't physically able to do {just been under a week since my two part (two days back to back) major lower back surgery} and was NOT supposed to be doing those kinds of exercises yet, based on my Doctors orders)and denied me medication he had called in for me just a couple of days of my being there, and didn't follow the directions ON The Bottles of the medication He sent with me over there. They changed up my other meds I had been taking for years from my Primary Care Doctor! They do NOT KNOW my medical history and there are certain meds I CAN NOT HAVE FOR OTHER HEALTH REASONS!!! My bed was worn out and was causing bruising on my lower back and butt and causing even MORE PAIN and hurting me where I had already been cut 7 times from my very freshly done surgery!! I asked for them to bring me another mattress and it wasn't until the night before I checked myself out of that "Hell house" that they offered me a blowup pad with holes in it (it wasn't solid pad) and it was hard as a brick so that didn't work. I would not have lasted on that mattress another night so I am so glad I got OUT OF THERE when I did. I don't even give them a one star rating, I would give them a negative 100 rating, but this doesn't allow for that on here. These people think they rank way above my personal sergion and my Primary Car Doctor and just ran things the way They wanted to with NO REGARD to my needs Or the man in the room next to me who was crying out for help and they would talk amongst themselves and even to ME that he had lost his legs and would scream all the time and they just ignored him and I would hear them treating him badly when they did go in there. I felt so bad for him. That's why I will NEVER recommend this place to ANYONE, not even my WORST ENEMY if I had one which I don't. Oh and the meds I brought with me... I had factor 8 meds (I'm a bleeder and these help my blood to clot so I don't bleed out and die!) that needed to be kept refrigerated... they (all 7 vials of them) were left in my room for two days until my friend came and got them. BUT my personal bag of meds I had with me that my friends was to take back home with her when she came to get my factor 8 meds... they took those and locked them in their pharmacy and would Not give them back so my friend could take them when she took the factor 8 meds...And once I was OUTSIDE their building, they gave them back to me. I opened the case to see if they were all there and it had been ransacked! Nothing in order like I had them and looked as if they had dumped all my meds out and then just threw them back in the case! I was fit to be tired!! If you ask me, this placed need to be closed down and those people need to be arrested for the way they treat people in there. I will NEVER go to a Rehab center again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
"Therapy is alright however, there was a African American lady that may have been an aide, that would make verbal comments that I had no visitors through the week. My husband worked and was in College so he only visited me on the weekends. We also lived over an hour away. They also bathed me in scalding hot water after that I told them I'll bathe myself, although I couldn't walk. I hope to never need rehabilitation again. This was year 2021."
