Reviews of Cannon Ball Bridge
"This is a must see if you are in the area! It’s a converted train bridge over the Wabash River. The toll booth is on the Illinois side past the 2nd river bottom bridge. You could technically cross from the Indiana side, u-turn and not pay but don’t! Pay the toll, go eat at the cannonball bar and grill and say hello to the friendly locals."
"A farm country secret, solid work of engineering and relic of our railroad legacy. We gave $2 to a cheerful lady at the toll booth and away we went, not quite knowing what to expect: 1. Roads leading up the bridge are paved. 2. This a one lane bridge, there are no traffic lights. Just be courteous to each other, wait your turn and there will be no issue. 3. It's built for trains, not cars so it's a tight fit but there are guardrails so you won't fall into the river. 4. Pay attention to the wood deck, there are incidents of flat tires and damage so beware. 5. Enjoy bumping your way over the Wabash, this bridge is a hoot. We crossed over in a car, no 4X4 Jeep required although that would be more fun. If you're in the area give this a try."
"Yes, this is a must visit if you are in the area. Be sure to look for the soldiers grave. We loved crossing at dusk with a high river. The sound of the chains is creepy!"
"Very cool piece of history. My daughter and I are both amazed by this old bridge. Driving across the old wooden beams is quite an experience, especially after walking out on the them and feeling them give under our why!"
"This is a pretty cool old Railroad Bridge that has been converted into a Toll Bridge for vehicles. It cost a $1.50 only collected on the Illinois side. The Toll Booth is about a 1/4 mile from the Bridge. From the Indiana side you could actually cross the bridge, turn around, and then return without paying. However for a $1.50 you should probably just pay. That way you can check out St. Francisville, Illinois."
