About the Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge
Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge, located in West Blocton, Alabama, is a beautiful park and tourist attraction that is rich in wildlife and offers various wildlife-dependent recreation opportunities. Visitors come to the refuge to enjoy solitude, connect with nature, and appreciate the diverse wildlife with family and friends.
Established to protect and manage a section of the Cahaba River and its associated land, the refuge is home to five federally listed species. With a management goal to maintain and improve the biological integrity of the river and adjacent systems, the refuge aims to restore these systems to their pre-settlement conditions. Utilizing tools like prescribed fire and tree planting, the refuge is working towards restoring the altered lands over time.
The Cahaba River is known for its unique rock shoals that create pools and riffles, providing habitat for rare plant and animal species. The refuge is home to the largest known stand of the imperiled shoals lily, locally known as the Cahaba lily. Visitors can explore the refuge's digital library to view documents and learn more about the conservation efforts being made.
By working with others to conserve, protect, and enhance fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats, Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge is dedicated to benefiting the American people. Reviews of Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge
"I love this place. The dirt road parallels the river for about a mile. There are swimming holes & great opportunities for fishing. The cahaba lilies are gorgeous in the spring."
"Had a great time with my boyfriend. Got out of the rat race and back to nature. I could breath again. Took lots of pics and videos to share. These pics are of a small stream we found. These are not of the Cahaba River itself."
"We went when the Cahaba Lilly is in bloom and it was absolutely gorgeous. Some areas are slippery but it was easy to find a good path. There is a small beachy area with a rope swing. There are no public restrooms and the road in is unpaved, so go slowly. Highly recommend coming here."
"The lilies are beautiful! Be careful walking out to them. Some of the rocks are slippery. There is also a small beach area you can swim at."
"Wild and beautiful any time if year, but between roughly Mother’s Day and Father’s day every year the beautiful and rare Cahaba lilies bloom in the shoals of the Cahaba River. Put it on your bucket list to visit. Wading and swimming in the clean cool water is a fun activity for all but the rocks are slippery and water swift where the lilies bloom so it is a good idea to bring a hiking pole."
