About Us

McGulpin Rock, located in Mackinaw City, Michigan, is a significant tourist attraction with a rich history dating back to at least 1615. This rock, used by French explorers to navigate the Straits of Mackinac, is five times larger than Plymouth Rock and played a crucial role in early American exploration. Despite its importance, the story of McGulpin Rock has often been overlooked in textbooks due to the dominance of English perspectives in early U.S. history. The rock, along with the nearby McGulpin Point Lighthouse, serves as a reminder of the French contributions to American history and is a key landmark in Emmet County. Visitors can explore the rock, lighthouse, and surrounding area to learn about the region's Native American heritage, clashes between British, French, and native forces, and the changing water levels of the Great Lakes. Owned by Emmet County, the lighthouse is open to the public from May to October and has undergone extensive restorations. The county continues to celebrate its history and provide recreational opportunities for visitors and residents, ensuring that landmarks like McGulpin Rock remain protected for future generations to enjoy.

"This place is Fabulous for Sunrises and Sunsets. Another thing not to miss... The lighthouse trail entrance near the rock. It's a nice path up with some neat informational stops."
"An interesting historical spot worth checking out if you are in the area. It is just a rock, but a huge one at that. Used for ship navigation since the 1600’s it weighs over 54 tons. Bring your camera for the photo opp."
"So with the snow and everything, we did not actually get to see the rock, but the blue ice we were looking for closer to the bridge and Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse was found here which was super exciting. I hope to go back in the summer to actually see the rock someday. The beach here has a nice path uphill through the woods to the lighthouse. Its not too steep and still accessible in the winter. I loved the signs and with the history of the area and the cutouts. A great trip for the family. You are also able to get a different view of Mackinac Bridge from the beach, too."
"Don't miss out on this little hidden spot. Great views of the lake and Mackinaw bridge. I parked across from the lighthouse and walked my dog down to the water then walked back up thru the trail where you can learn more about the history of McGulpin Rock. The trail will lead you to the light house."
