Reviews of Blackjack Springs State Natural Area
"So many leeks!"
"Hiked to the third springs of the Blackjack Springs. Trail has downfall, from a blowdown event this summer. Water us high."
"This place is beautiful and serene. Beware of bears. Just went on a hike there today and crossed paths with one. Considering my children were with me, I didn't stick around to find out how friendly it was. Considering we walked away and s/he didn't follow, I'm guessing it's fine."
"Beautiful area very relaxing!!!"
"This is a true wilderness. There are only about 2 miles of marked trail here - but.... There are probably 25 miles of old forest roads out here that were abandoned and left to grow up after the wilderness designation was applied to the area. So you can use them pretty easily in many cases. While there are a few places that they are overgrown and you have to bushwhack mostly you can just follow them and see where others have before you. There are no real publications about the area but it is interesting and worth traversing. On the east side of Whispering lake there is a small tribute maintained to a man who helped achieve the wilderness designation. The spring that the wilderness is named for flow into Blackjack Creek and there are a couple of good campsites on the bluffs above it. The wilderness area can be accessed from the official parking area shared with the Deerskin Trails, from the head of the old Blackjack Road that is now closed, from a footbridge on the north side of the Deerskin river that represents the North end of Blackjack Road, or a tiny unmarked parking lot on hwy 70. Note that only the first 2 locations have any sort of access to the 'official' trail. The southern access lot is near an old forest road but that is not official trail. Blackjack Creek divides this area from the northern area where official trail runs but is only knee deep in many areas if you want to cross it. There are a couple of other access areas where forest roads once entered from Military Road but were closed when it became a wilderness. All of the closed roads are blocked by boulders. There is good water to filter in the Deerskin River, Whispering Lake, Blackjack Springs, Blackjack Creek and a few seasonal spots throughout the area. There are many large trees scattered throughout wilderness of various species. Remains of old camps and homesteads can be found in the wilderness. Rumor tells of a gold mine that once operated in the area but the actual location is unknown and it closed without success."
