The first lighthouse on the island was built in 1839 and has since been replaced with the current 100-foot tall brick tower that stands on a pile foundation. The lighthouse features a third-order Fresnel lens that produces a fixed white light at a focal plane of 104 feet. The institution has a rich history, with keepers such as Aaron A. Sheridan and Lyman Sheridan, whose lives were touched by tragedy while serving at the lighthouse. The station's activities were consolidated with the nearby South Manitou Lifeboat Station in 1945, and the fog signal was discontinued in 1954. Visitors can explore the lighthouse and learn about its fascinating past, making it a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and lighthouse lovers.

"Magnificent tall building. Great views in all directions. Entire island is such a nice escape from the crowds and noise. It felt like entire Island is gently floating, and yet you felt safe by being surrounded by the mighty cedars, pines and birches. The fact that almost entire southern trail from the lighthouse to the Valley of the Giants (the cedars) is in shade of the forest, makes walking entire route so much pleasant. Following southern trail you can visit so much in short period of time: lighthouse, lake, cedars, shipwreck. Just leave the lighthouse at the end. That way you could see from high above how much distance have you made. Absolutely one of the best trips during this vacations."

"Well worth a visit. Beautiful views, especially from the top of the lighthouse. Lighthouse stairs are steep but not impossible with young kids, had 4 year olds with us and they got up just fine. Highly recommend making the trip for the views."
