The Mark Twain House & Museum
About the Business
The Mark Twain House & Museum, located at 351 Farmington Avenue in Hartford, Connecticut, is a must-visit tourist attraction for fans of the iconic American author. The museum has meticulously restored Twain's historic home, where he lived with his family from 1874 to 1891 and wrote some of his most famous works, including Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.
In addition to offering tours of Twain's beautifully preserved home, designated as a National Historic Landmark, the institution hosts a wide range of activities and educational programs that explore Twain's literary legacy and provide insights into his life and times. Visitors can also browse and shop at The Mark Twain House & Museum Store, which offers a variety of exclusive finds, gifts, games, books, apparel, and more. Proceeds from the store support the ongoing upkeep and restoration of Twain's historic home and its programs.
The institution also presents the prestigious Mark Twain American Voice in Literature Award, which recognizes a work of fiction that captures the essence of the "American Voice" and experiences. The award, established in 2016, includes a $25,000 cash prize underwritten by bestselling author and museum trustee, David Baldacci.
With its dedication to preserving and celebrating Mark Twain's legacy, The Mark Twain House & Museum continues to honor the author's impact on American literature and culture. As Forbes declared it "America's Best House Museum" in 2021, the institution remains a beacon for Twain enthusiasts and literary aficionados alike.

"A beautiful house of a best American writer (in my opinion). To walk inside the house, you need to buy a ticket and book a tour (included). It’s better to do it in advance because the place is popular and there are a lot of tourist’s buses. The house is very interesting, definitely recommend to visit. Photos inside are not allowed."
"It was a nice guided tour. We went guided tour with character actors. It was a nice experience and great to see century old house as it was during it’s time and learn its history. No photos inside the house."
"We did the ghost tour at night. It was a fun Halloween time event to do. I brought my 15 year old daughter and she liked it as well. I wouldn't recommend it for kids younger than 13 just because it's alot of talking and walking, which I love, but definitely don't think younger kids would appreciate it. We didn't have anything spooky happen however and I wouldn't go so far as to say I feel it's haunted but it was a neat tour and great for people who like historical stuff mixed in with the weird and strange."
"We loved our tour here! My husband and I just did the general house tour with our baby and had a great experience. The tour guide Justin was very thorough and we learned a lot. Beautiful time of year to go, grounds where gorgeous. Would also recommend the other exhibits."
""The loveliest home that ever was." ~Samuel Clemens. It is a lovely home and wandering the grounds and exploring is a wonderful experience. The house has all of the charm and the tour guides explain each room. You have to opt into the guided tour to see the inside and you're not allowed to take photos inside but that makes sense. We don't need people bumping into things to take a selfie. A fun and enjoyable experience and highly recommend."
