Arthur Heurtley House - Frank Lloyd Wright 318 Forest Avenue, Oak Park, IL 60302
About the Business
The Arthur Heurtley House, designed by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, is located at 318 Forest Avenue in Oak Park, Illinois. This historic landmark, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is one of the earliest examples of the Prairie style that Wright is famous for.
Built in 1902 for a wealthy client, the Heurtley House features many innovative design elements that would later become signature features of Wright's work. The house rests on a concrete base and has a unique horizontal design with a hipped roof and a ribbon of art glass windows. The interior layout is also unconventional, with the living and dining areas located on the second floor.
Between 1920 and 1946, the house was occupied by Wright's sister and her husband. In 1997, the house was purchased by Ed and Diana Baehren, who financed a museum-grade restoration. Although the Heurtley House remains privately owned and closed to the public, it stands as a testament to Wright's groundbreaking architectural vision.
In addition to his work in Illinois, Frank Lloyd Wright also had a significant impact on the architectural landscape of Arizona, where he built his personal winter home, Taliesin West. PhD student David R. Richardson provides an overview of Wright's notable projects in the Grand Canyon state, showcasing his enduring influence on the region's built environment.

Reviews
"Did not go in, but the outside is amazing. 7th building after the studio."
"Beautiful outside, the interior is even more so artistic! Frank knew design. Frank knew what he liked. Frank made sure you saw what he saw... and liked. I especially like the color palate here. Always be thoughtful and respectful to the owners. This is not a public building..."
"The wonderful owners of this masterpiece are welcoming. They host Frank Lloyd Wright benefits, donate their home for fundraisers and don't mind FLW fans taking photos on their lawn."
"This is one of the very beautiful houses designed my Frank Lloyd designed. The furniture is still restored and the house is an Engineerig marvel. If you are lucky you will get to visit from inside or you can simply see a video in YouTube and they are pretty good."
"Please note that this is a private residence and only open to the public on special occasions. This is my favorite "Prairie" house by Frank Lloyd Wright. It is a masterpiece, and worth a half-hour just to look at from up and down the street. It is in the midst of many Wright structures in Oak Park, including his home and studio. The best way to experience these is by attending a "Wright-Plus" Weekend, which are put on annually by the Wright Foundation. During these tours, private homes that are normally closed to the public are opened for tours, plus there are lectures and events to attend and learn more."
