Hartwick Pines Visitor Center, located at 2833 Monarch Drive in Grayling, Michigan, is a travel agency that serves as a hub for outdoor enthusiasts seeking information on fishing, hunting, shooting ranges, snowmobiling, mushroom hunting, and trail experiences in Michigan. The center offers resources on DNR regulations, permits, and educational programs, as well as grants for promoting recreational opportunities and wildlife habitat preservation.
Visitors can explore the 1,500-square-foot exhibit hall featuring interactive displays and a "living tree" that tell the story of Michigan's forests past, present, and future. The center also houses an auditorium and classroom for educational programs and events. The Friends of Hartwick Pines organization supports park activities and improvements, operating a bookstore with a variety of materials for visitors.
In addition to the visitor center, Hartwick Pines State Park offers miles of trails through old-growth pine forests, lakes, and diverse habitats. The Logging Museum showcases Michigan's 19th-century logging industry, while the park itself boasts campgrounds, amenities, and recreational opportunities for visitors of all ages. "Paved sections and non paved sections, so handicapped can easily navigate part of the trails. Educational, along the way there are displays that give you information of things in the forest and wildlife. Great for any age that enjoys hiking/walking."
"Beautiful park with an awesome story behind it. Darling little chapel and a real cool logging museum"
"Awesome place. Logging museum is real cool. Short hiking trail to the lakes is a really nice little hike. It starts at campsite 16"
"Small but nice visitor center with a small gift shop and clean restrooms. Helpful staff with lots of trails around to wonder and see the nature."
"The visitor center contains excellent interpretive displays. Young children and students will enjoy many of them. The historical aspect of Hartwick Pines is well-presented. The other sites, including the logging museum historical buildings make Hartwick Pines a great place to plan a vacation day. Try to hit it during the Black Iron Festival in August. My only gripe: the visitor center is only open weekends. We hiked on the Au Sable River Trail during our April 2022 visit. Other times we have usually walked on the Old Growth Trail, which is spectacular."
