Disability Advocates of Kent County
About the Business
Disability Advocates of Kent County is a non-profit organization located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, dedicated to helping individuals with disabilities gain control over their lives. Founded in 1981 by individuals with disabilities, our organization offers personalized support and assistance to ensure accessibility on a personal level. We serve the Kent, Ionia, Montcalm, Mecosta, and Osceola areas, providing occupational therapists to assess equipment needs and support individuals in finding housing.
Our unique perspective, with 75% of our board and 56% of our staff being individuals living with disabilities, allows us to offer valuable knowledge and experience to our constituents. We work to eliminate systemic barriers and enhance programs so that people with disabilities can live the self-directed life they choose. Through our Absolutely Accessible Kent program, we offer transit advocacy, education, technical assistance on accessibility, and Universal Design to create a more inclusive community.
We believe in the importance of community education and technical assistance to increase inclusiveness and accessibility for all. Our ultimate vision is access for all, regardless of ability. By offering opportunities for individuals to volunteer and donate, we are able to assist the disabled community and make our world more accessible for everyone. We also provide resources and guidance for Veterans with disabilities, as well as home modifications, equipment, and funding options for individuals to continue living independently.

"Nice people and really helpful and I was really interested in what they had to say."
"Very helpful with equipment for mobility. Help me with a walker and bath chair that have made things a little easier."
"Assisted me re replacing my old roller walker with more efficient one. Set up my apartment with toilet seat with bars, wall bars for bath assistance, best chair seat just got my apartment to conform for my disabilities from my mini strokes, etc."
"I could go on and on for pages and pages and days and days about how wonderful these people and Ms Jenny, specifically, are. I have been communicating with Jenny Markel for over a year now. Today was the first time we were able to have some face time. She is a wonderful person who truly cares about the people she and DAKC serve. If you are disabled or know someone who is disabled DAKC is an outstanding resource for the disabled community. I would very strongly recommend DAKC to anyone needing support. Thank you DAKC!!! Mike"
"There was a conflict of interest and they claimed they tried to help but in reality made my situation worse,. I am currently filing a Civil Rights complaint against the other organization involved, Just so you are aware they took five days to return my call and say they would not further help me. How can they not help me further when I was never helped in the first place?. Wish I could give a lower score than 1 !"
