Reviews of The Birmingham Museum
"Went with friends! Very interesting information about the Underground Railroad, local abolitionists, how Woodward Avenue formed, etc. Thoroughly enjoyed this learning experience and highly recommend visiting the museum."
"On October 21, 2023, I had the opportunity visited the museum with friends. There was clear evidence of the extensive research to curate the information about diversity in Birmingham and the surrounding communities. As a person of color living in Oakland County, it was impressive to see how cultures and people of different races and ethnicities worked so well together to make transformative positive change in the community. There are clearly many unsung heroes (black, white, Asian, Latinx) who made a path for people like me. I so appreciate the extensive tour that Donna gave and the major contribution of time and talent that she and Joy Young have given. The depth of their knowledge, passion and commitment to this work were palpable. The exhibits, including extensive information about the underground railroad and freedom seekers, far exceeded my expectation! I hope to stay connected to the museum in the future and will plan on making a donation. Thanks again for curating such great content and offering this jewel in the city of Birmingham for all to learn from and grow! Sincerely, Dr. Kimberlydawn Wisdom"
"Had a great visit with our fellowship group! Happy and hopeful to learn about the body of information you have regarding diversity in Birmingham. I was especially impressed with the research regarding freedom seekers, the Underground Railroad, and Birmingham abolitionists!"
"On August 10, 2023, I emailed museum director Leslie Pielack, and wrote: "Can anyone there please email me a photo of a store at 180 E. Brown Street around 1973 called Granny Takes a Trip? Or a diagram or document showing this location, or one nearby, leased to a store by this name?" Ms. Pielack replied "The only record we have is that there is a listing in the White Pages for North Woodward in 1974 that shows that name and address, with a phone number of 645-2388. If you would like us to do formal research, our fee is $25 per hour." She said they did this initial quick review as a courtesy. I replied, no, I did not want to pay for "formal research," but would appreciate just getting a scan of that document as I initially requested. Leslie replied: "For us to continue to work on your query would entail the $25 per hour fee, and there are additional fees for providing scans and the time involved in answering your follow up questions." I have no problem paying for research, but for her to find something "as a courtesy," know I wanted a scan or photo of it, and purposely not make that photo or scan, is poor. To then email me essentially "Yes, we have what you want, that we found for free as a courtesy. in the time it takes to open a phone book, but I won't give it to you until you give me $25" feels like a shakedown. She should have told me about the $25 minimum before doing anything. Secondly, she said it is $25 per hour for all hours, but the website says $25 for the first hour, and $15 for additional hours."
"Good small museum. As we reached late it was closed. Nice surrounding and good walking trail around."
