"A 3 hour appointment for a patient that is in severe pain is totally unacceptable. There has to be a better process for this. You could have a area set aside for this but instead it has to be done in the lobby. This is very discouraging I understand you didn't come up with these outlandish questions,but is it to much to ask that you buy a table it's almost like it's being done on purpose to push some buttons before the interview"

"Ok, look—I know the poor reviews on here might make you leery, but having gone to my own appointment at Dr. Halpern’s office, and having had a LOT of experience with mental health care/pain management care/how the two overlap, let me offer my own review and explanation as to why the people making complaints are harping on the same issue and NOT UNDERSTANDING WHY IT IS BOTH NECESSARY/ULTIMATELY HELPFUL! The main things I keep seeing repeated are that “the staff are nice” but “the appointment was rushed” and they “didn’t understand the need for all of the weird/invasive questions” on the 500+ questionnaire being used to evaluate them. Let’s start from the top: 1) “The staff are nice.” — Yes, they are! I actually enjoyed joking around with two of the front desk schedulers who were working the day I came in to have a pain management evaluation. They had lovely personalities, were very clear about how to mark my answers to the questions & making sure I understood what I was being asked to fill out on the intake paperwork/questionnaire/etc. 2) “The appointment felt rushed” — With this assessment, I pointedly disagree. When the people helping me with the directions for the questionnaire, they made a point to remind me a few times, “If you need to take a break, to ask us something, to use the restroom, anything? Just let us know—and don’t feel hurried on the questionnaire, if we need to pause it so Dr. Halpern and the PA assigned to you can come in and talk with you, that’s not a problem at all! You can resume and do more questions in between things. Also, this is YOUR time, you are paying us. If you need extra time, we can put you in a different office space so you can work comfortably and without being disturbed.” Sorry, but if YOU felt rushed, that may be on you, as opposed to Dr. Halpern & his staff members. Dr. Halpern/his PA’s/his scheduling staff that were at my initial appointment were all incredibly kind, patient, and good-humored, and were all calm and helpful whenever I had questions, which made me feel quite comfortable. 3) “The questionnaire was weird/invasive/too long.” — Look, the staff are happy to dig into the reasons for certain types of questions if you ASK THEM, as opposed to casting aspersions as to what purpose they serve. Also, the questions are VERY short (any where from 3 words to a full one or two short sentences), and you just have to follow a “Definitely/Yes/No/Absolutely Not” type of scale system to answer and follow directions on how to correctly mark the questions on your ScanTron sheet. But some people are fast, others are slower, and it’s all subjective. However, while the questionnaire may seem odd to SOME people, I’ve learned a lot about these types of questions—some are to evaluate if you have depression or anxiety. Some are for helping them evaluate if you deal with ADHD, OCD, or PTSD. Some are helpful for identifying symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder, or schizophrenia & borderline personality disorder, or if you are having difficulty with an eating disorder, or even suicidal ideation. They may SEEM weird, but I assure you—EVERY ONE OF THOSE QUESTIONS HAS BEEN DESIGNED & PUT THERE FOR A REASON. It is always fine to need extra time or ask questions if you don’t understand something, but insulting this practice/the people who work there is an incredibly uninformed way to deal with the fact that you couldn’t be bothered to ask questions if something felt odd. When I was in my appointment with Dr. Halpern himself, he also made a point to ask questions not just from the questionnaire I was answering, but also about how my pain level felt to me both at that time & over the past few years, what my mental & emotional relationships were like with my pain/previous treatment at other clinics, what things had felt either helpful, neutral, or not. I am also going to be starting therapy with one of his Social Workers, Juliet, and I look forward to starting! Five stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️"
