Reviews of College of Osteopathic Medicine
"Excellent faculty, good location and diverse student population. Allowed me to be well prepared for clinical practice."
"Best place to see a cadaver on campus!"
"I attended MSUCOM and I would say that I enjoyed my time there as a medical student. I did not have a hard matching into residency and passed my boards easily."
"My opinion based on my experience: The good: -MSUCOM has strong post grad partnerships to choose from when you graduate. It will be easy for you to match into your desired residency. -MSUCOM has some good teachers that can help you. Usually, the newer ones are the best. Teachers become lack-luster after a while. -The three campus system is practical and allows for more options that best fits you lifestyle. The three campuses are located in Detroit, Macomb and East Lansing The bad: -MSUCOM had one of the lowest board scores for osteopathic schools. Poor student support structure for those who go throw hardships. You have 1-3 “psychologists." Just don't bother. The ugly: MSUCOM is a sponsor of institutional discrimination. If your name is Jen, Dave...etc.. feel free to break the professional and legal standards without fear of disciplinary actions. The same goes if you have family or close friends in the staff. Whether its a violent sexual assault or a classic DUI, if you "belong," chances are people on the third floor will sweep it under the rug and you get to do it all over again. On the other hand, if your name is Ode, Fazel, Mohammad, or something too diverse...and you're just not related to anyone that works there...chances the administration will harshly pursue you. Strampel and Nassar are gone but their posse on the third floor are going strong to keep things the same. Due to some relic laws, Medical schools are super powerful. Trust me when I say the Medical students outlined proceedings and rights are not worth the paper they’re printed on. MSUCOM can make a case for disciplinary action over any issue declaring you unfit due to “public safety” reasons. You’re best bet is be prepared and retain outside council in advance (without giving notice to school about that fact obviously). In addition, document any complaints or adverse interactions with students or staff. It is more likely than not that you'll run into unsavory personalities who exhibit schadenfreude-like tendencies and will enjoy watching you struggle. Lastly, privacy and dishonesty. Everything you say will be recorded and used against you. Went to the personal health counseling to vent out? Welp! Whatever you say will be shared and recoded to hold leverage over students later on. So if you have a drinking problem or life stressor...just seek help outside the school. If things turn sour later on, they will make the argument that you had “substance abuse issues anyway.” Regardless how friendly staff looks there, it’s essentially “you vs. them” mentality, but you’re still too young and trusting to see it. Look, I am not telling you not to go there. I am just saying be ready. Things could be sour. Things could be sweet. Generally speaking, you will come out more pessimistic going there based on what I went through."
