"The place was tiny and lacked most amenities. Rooms were clean, except for bathrooms. We found mold on the walls all around the shower and tub area. The mattresses were old, as they had "sunken" areas where people had slept many times. It was an OK place to "drop and sleep" for the night, but if you are looking for a "vacation spot" with more amenities and updates look elsewhere. This wasn't terrible, but for the same amount of money you could stay in Sturgeon Bay or elsewhere and get a little more for your money. I have included photos of the mold. Also, the walls and ceilings are either paper thin, or have no insulation because we could hear walking around as well as people dropping things all night long both beside our room as well as the room above us."
"I booked a room for just me and my dog over Thanksgiving weekend for a little mini vacation while my kids & husband went to visit my mother-in-law. When I checked in on Thanksgiving Day, I promptly locked myself out of my room while unloading my car and had to call the owners to let me in. I told them that if they were in the middle of dinner, I would be happy to take a hike for a while and meet them later, but they insisted that they were only a few minutes away and would see me in 5 minutes. The first room had a queen bed, full sofa & kitchenette and was clean and comfortable if a little bit dated in decor. I slept well and took off early the next morning with a full mug of coffee brewed in the hotel room and drove a little north to catch the sunrise at Jacksonport Beach. Shortly after breakfast, I got a call from my husband who said that his mom wasn't feeling well after their couple of days visiting her, and could they come to join me in Door County? I called the hotel office line which transferred to the owners at home - I told them my predicament as I didn't want to have 4 people + a dog in a room with just a queen bed without their permission. They asked me to give them a few minutes to see what they could work out and called a little later to let me know that they had a room with 2 double beds that they could move us to so we could be more comfortable. This room also had a kitchenette and table but did not have a couch since there were two beds. The kitchenette is wonderful to have - especially with a family as we can get breakfast into the kids before traipsing around the peninsula. The second room was just as clean and comfortable as the first and the photos on the hotel's website are good representations of what they look like. They have porches with sliding glass doors, which face the woods. There was enough room for the kids to play between the beds and the TV stand/dresser (they're 3 & 6) and they loved having the playground area to blow off a little last bit of steam at the end of the day. The hotel was quiet while we were there (we seemed to be one of only 3-4 rooms booked over this weekend) and the peninsula had tons of family-friendly activities from great shopping to Holly Days in Egg Harbor, complete with Santa's arrival on a fire truck, and finally, all the great light displays after dark. All-in-all, I would absolutely book here again. I thought the lodge was very budget-friendly compared to other options on the peninsula, and it was conveniently located with easy access to Sturgeon Bay as well as to some of our favorite hiking trails mid-peninsula (Cave Point, Ridges Sanctuary & one of the Door County Land Trust trails we love). It was also an easy drive to all the action with Holly Days in Egg Harbor. The fact that this lodging also had a kitchenette with a full fridge and stove/oven was a kicker to the convenience and comfort our family found here."
"This place is lovely. We loved being away from the hustle and bustle and being on the 'quiet side' of the peninsula. We enjoyed our stay very much! We're not big shoppers but did a bit of it while we were there. We're avid hikers and this place is close to Whitefish Dunes which is gorgeous hiking!!! The place is extremely clean! The bed was comfortable! Everything worked as expected. Yes it is older but the owners keep everything in amazing shape and have truly thought of everything! Even to include a bag of microwave popcorn as a gift to each guest. The hand lotion is very nice. Yes, the place is a bit older and hasn't attempted to keep up 'aesthetic' changes but it checks all the boxes for us. They even have a timed heat lamp in the bathroom which was fantastic! A lot of thought has gone into this place and Mary and Ron are great hosts! And their son even let us pet the new puppy! Cuz who doesn't love puppies?!?! Thanks again! We will be back!"
"Highly recommend this Lodge and it's location!! It is in a quiet, serene area only minutes from everything on the Peninsula and it's many amenities, We particularly liked the connected outdoor deck seats. The couple that own and run it are VERY hospitable, and run a small, but clean, efficient and desirable operation. Will ALWAYS consider staying here on our annual visits!"
"We had a great experience at the Runaway Lodge. Our room was very clean and comfortable. Mary and Ron are great hosts and very knowledgeable on Door County and they provided great recommendations for restaurants. Would totally come back again for another visit."
