Reviews of South High School
"I lasted one year there and switched high schools. I couldn't handle just being a number. I fell through the cracks and no one seemed to care enough to help. My brother went here and did fine, so it's not just a terrible school, but for anyone who struggles, this is not the place for them."
"I graduated in 2010 and loved my time there. The building is depressing, but the teachers are inspiring and the community is amazing. Very progressive and welcoming all around."
"If i were to be completely honest, the building is not the best (to say the least) but at least its a pretty large campus. The teachers are great for the most part, i'm in open so i can't speak for the liberal and all nation students when i say this. The community overall is very great, there are many services for mental health and general consoling. Also many lgbt groups and services (a counselor is working just for lgbt counseling). The src group (silver ribbon campaign) is amazing, for it gives more acceptance and support towards mental health disabilities and such. There's a lot of exposure to others opinions, personalities, cultures, but that's not really exclusive to south, I just feel like it's more abundant. It's really a good thing, it's changed me a lot, and got me friends that i'll never forget."
"Very welcoming teachers who strive for the success of their students. But with that said, their academic standards are O.K. They're not high yet not low. For those who succeed well in academics generally don't find it a challenge. I was one of those students and decided to attend Minneapolis Community and Technical College (MCTC) through the Post-Secondary Enrollment Option (PSEO) program. I will soon graduate MCTC with my Associates of Arts in Liberal Arts and my High School Diploma in spring 2016 simultaneously. Besides academics, South have a very diverse population of students. There are very minor tensions between students (not by race, but by clicks of friends). They also need more counselors. I wouldn't recommend this school if your student is looking for academic challenges. However, if your student or child is looking for a school that excels in arts and sports, this is my number one recommendation. Hopes this helps! "I'm an alumnus of the school's Liberal Arts program (and soon to be an alumnus of UW-Madison) and I thoroughly enjoyed my time at South High. I toured several schools- including Southwest and Blake- before settling on South and in the end I decided to go there because I liked its diversity. Most of my teachers are still teaching there today and they immersed us in their respective subjects. Even as class sized swelled and funding was reduced towards the end of my time there, they still managed to give us individually focused attention and new ways to teach their subjects. The coursework and expectations in the Liberal Arts program could sometimes be challenging, but I feel that it really prepared me for college. My favorite memories from my time at South are definitely from our trip to Italy. Students in the language programs as well as certain history and English courses have opportunities to travel to countries relevant to their course of study. I went to Italy with my AP English and World History classes to study the classics. If the school is still performing as well when I have children, I would be happy to send them there."
