"I was in there when I was 12 and stayed for a year and didn't want to leave when it was time to go home I loved that place and all the people I ever met there Katie stocker was my teacher there cus at the time school was on the property when went there I couldn't get along with no adult when I left I knew how to respect an adult it was the first time at 12 years old that I ever had bran new name brand clothes and shoose winter coat and the coolest winter boots I ever had till this day I had my time there believe that but I would trust them with my children and you. Should with yours if it is a mental health issue or a behavioral problem they know what to do this is coming from somebody that is 51 and I was there when I was 12 and I would still trust them my name is Joe swazey III"
"The doctors are great and so are the therapist. The unit staff are horrible . My son is being discharged tomorrow after a 6 month stay ,sad to say he had to go through some physical abuse during restraints,us as parents leave a mark restraining ,we're in jail they get away with it. Nobody should hurt a child and ones with mental health issues your causing more trauma and pain. I'm over it. So glad my son is coming home so I can protect him after a long stay. Thank you to the staff that enjoyed my little man and were good to him, as for the other abusive staff go get a different job, this isn't the place for you."
"My son is on his 2nd stay at Hawthorn due to aggressive and unsafe behavior. They keep him safe and provide him with therapy, school, and medication management. He has gone from having multiple daily issues to several months with minimal issues. With COVID-19 making it impossible for in-person visits for the majority of his stay, the staff did everything they could to make my son feel comfortable and cared about while being hospitalized and away from his family for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and his birthday. They made sure he had gifts to open and special treats. I receive regular communication and have virtual meetings with staff sometimes twice a week. It's tough having family in the hospital but I take comfort knowing he is in a good place."
"Was there in the mid 90s. They immediately diagnosed with me Oppositional Defiance Disorder. They loaded me up on medications. They had old fashioned behavioral therapies. One required i stay in my room by myself for 30 days. I had to earn time out. The first week i couldn't leave. Then 5 minutes, 10, 20, etc. No staff was allowed to talk to me except therapist twice a week. They cut off my parents visits and phone calls. Children were improperly restrained for 12 plus hours just for being sarcastic but werent violent or harming themselves Sexual abuse by midnight staff was a regular occurrence. I have been told by residents that they have completely changed since the 90s and its a safe place now. Im doubtful. When one girl was brave enough to say she was being abused by staff she ended up in restraints and lost privleges. They didn't believe her and never reported it. The rest of us knew it was pointless to speak out. The charge nurse had the key to the rights complaint box and would read them outloud at staff meetings and laugh at them. Usually threw them away. We were helpless and had no way to advocate for ourselves. I have nightmares abput that place to this day."
"My son stayed for four months and was treated well. He has limited verbal skills but can let me know when he has been mistreated. He has never complained. He is doing very well. The staff treated me well and I was always notified about what was going on with him every step of the way. I am so grateful to Hawthorne Center."
