Reviews of Pine Rest Kalamazoo Clinic
"When you asked to be seen by a therapist and they put you with someone for almost a year who does nothing but put the same thing in your chart "patient shows improvement" but yet there is nothing different and then you find out it's because you've been seeing a guidance counselor... which is odd because I never got guidance or input.. very disappointing even after I told them my medical trauma and everything. Give mental health help a bad name!"
"I was at Pine Rest for alcohol detox about 10 years ago. It would not have been my choice, but at the time there were no other options. If you are not a devout Christian, avoid this place at all costs. These people were not good Christians. They were rude, unprofessional, condescending, judgmental, and sanctimonious. I was violently ill when I came in, and received no medication to aid with the detox aside from Vistaril, which is an antihistamine prescribed off label for anxiety. It also happens to be extremely dangerous when mixed with alcohol, which was still in my system at the time. In hindsight, I was lucky I did not have a seizure and die. To be very, very clear, I was not drunk or belligerent - I was polite and compliant despite being looked down upon by staff. All I wanted was some rest, but one of the nurses told me I had to attend an AA meeting immediately. When I told them I would try to make it, sick as I was, they replied "No, you WILL make it." This was the pervasive attitude of nearly all the staff - talking down to me like I was a child and showing no decency or compassion. I felt like all they saw me as was a degenerate drunk rather than a human being with a serious medical condition. Thankfully, I was able to get sober after going to another facility. I got my masters degree in social work and am now a therapist myself. I strive to show unconditional positive regard to all my clients no matter what condition they are in. Looking back on this experience years later, I can thank Pine Rest for teaching me how NOT to treat my clients, especially when they are in the most vulnerable positions they have ever known. I suppose that's worth a star."
"I was a patient at this facility for around 5yrs, maybe more, but in all of that time, I never once suggested anything on my own, and instead deferred to the judgement of my psychiatrist, Amy Reed. For a while that was fine, and even worked well.. I thought that we knew each other well enough to be candid and so when I finally did need help with my crippling anxiety after the most traumatic event of my life; to my utter shock, surprise, and disappointment none was offered, and the "options" I was given were ridiculous, and in my opinion, morally wrong, and almost antagonistic. You don't put someone on Seroquel for anxiety when a plethora of real anti-anxiety medications and other solutions exist. I hold no malice towards these people, but if you have real anxiety and need actual help, I would recommend going elsewhere for help."
"I am very happy with John Wheeler. He is knowledgeable and caring. I feel he really listens. I never feel rushed. He has even helped me on virutual visits. I would recommend him to anyone. I am also happy with S. Boyd, who has paid close attention to getting me the right meds. She is friendly and "cool"... knows her stuff. For your meds, go to her. However, I do not like dealing with the office staff. One lady ignores me while I''m standing right in front of her. She absolutely seems irritated with the job or me or both. Their phone system is the worst. No one ever seems to answer it and there are too many options to, if you're lucky, get to a real human being. This is critical as I have to go through them bc I can't email my provider. Place does not feel warm until you meet with the providers mentioned above."
"LOVE Amanda Walker! Have have a hard time finding a therapist I connect with and I definitely connect with her! Its always great to have someone to talk to even when you have nothing to talk about. I also wanted to include Susan and Chris who have worked so hard to save my life! They both spent so much time to help me get prescriptions I need to be on but my insurance will not cover. I can not say enough that if it was not for them fighting for me I would not be who I am right now. I have never in my 32 years found people who cared so much and do not treat you like a number they treat you like a human being!"
