"I have no idea what I did that prompted what felt very much like judgment from Dr. Veldhouse… Lisa left the practice so they encouraged me to work with Dr. Veldhouse to address hypertension I had been experiencing for some time. At the appointment, he began questioning my medication that is currently prescribed by a psychiatrist…which was fine, but it began to feel he was uneducated on the purpose of psychotropics, asked me if I truly needed my medication—one of which very much helped me get my life together and helps me function at my best. I tried my best to stay frank with this. After this he proceeded to question my divorce and how short my marriage was, asking if I had made a bad choice or if he did or both, etc. — not something that I’m proud of but something that is very personal to me and not what I made my appointment to discuss. He then asked me if I was in a relationship or planned to get married again some day…mind you I indicated I had been with a new partner for a year and a half now…and then he began to pressure me and scare me into STI testing saying that I could lose fertility and I could have STIs without symptoms (which I understand is true)— but at this point I’m appalled about the entire conversation. It was NOT what I made the appointment to discuss. I felt as though I was being classed as a “promiscuous mentally ill 20 something”. Following this, the doctor changed his tone and demeanor after he had asked me my profession and I let him know I was a licensed mental health provider. I then asked him if he had an idea on what to do with the medication for hypertension. He added another dosage to something I was currently taking and then asked me, the patient, when I wanted to come back. Considering he is the medical professional adjusting my medication, I asked him when he would like me to return. He tells me 4 months. I went to do a urine sample for the STI test I was pressured into, I go to the counter to schedule, he told them 6 months instead of 4. I’m not sure why we would monitor something 6 months later, but I have a feeling he and I both knew I wouldn’t be returning. Bad judgemental doctor. Originally I wasn’t sure I wanted to have a male as a pcp, but was willing to give it a fair shot. Unfortunately, this very much proved to me why I won’t. I imagine if I came to the appointment dressed in my business casual instead of the leggings and sweater I was in, I may have been regarded respectfully…but I’m not going to find out. If you are on any psychotropics, please look somewhere else that understands the importance of your medication. If you are a woman in your 20s— bring someone with you."
"Dr Veldhouse has been amazing since I started seeing him 3 years ago. My other half had him first as his PCP. Dr. Joel addressed critical matters and even taking personal time after hours for urgent matters. Holland sure lost an amazing doctor. Wayland locals, you're in good hands if you have him as your doctor."
"Dr. Joel Veldhouse is the best in the business. Joel is patient, kind, knowledgeable, and passionate about providing excellent care to his patients. I would highly recommend him to any one looking for a primary care physician."
