Reviews of UP Health System - Marquette
"A death that should have been prevented. My dad had a heart attack and drove himself to the hospital. We found out he needed a quadruple bypass and Dr Cable would be doing it. He had the surgery and the next day suffered from Subcutaneous Emphysema (air under the skin) which delayed recovery 10-12 days, then the ICU delirium began, delaying recovery more, neither seemed to have much of a treatment. He was moved out of the ICU after 22 excruciating days, about 18 hours after leaving the ICU my dad was removed from oxygen and sent home saying that he was fine. Multiple calls to Dr Cable after getting worse at home with no call back. My dad passed away before his first appointment with Dr Cable's PA. The Surgery seemed to go ok, but Dr Cable did not seem so happy with it. The day after the surgery, in the ICU, is when all of the problems started. The next day my dad suffered from Subcutaneous Emphysema, so air under his skin, in his face, hands, feet, chest, throat, and legs swelled up like he put on a few hundred pounds, it was also making it difficult for him to breathe, his eyes swelled shut and his incisions wept fluid. Dr Cable had no idea why this happened, and just said it happens. I found out the most common causes are due to some sort of trauma like damage to the lungs, facial bones or a tear in his airway. This delayed recovery 10-12 days as the swelling went down. Then the ICU delirium started, there didn't seem to be much of a treatment for that. Again, Dr Cable said it happens. We were in the ICU for around 22 days, I was there about 8 hours every day while he was there. In that time, I saw Dr Cable 3 times and one was when my dad got upset and demanded to see him. He isn't much for patient relations, like some of his other reviews said, but I didn't care as long as my dad was going to get better. We dealt with around 10-12 ICU nurses, 2 were exceptional, 2 were poor, and the rest were good. The administration is not good, they were badgering my dad about doing rehab at the hospital after discharge, every day and calling me at home about it. It was an unnecessary burden. He was supposed to get his chest tubes out then a few days later move to the cardiac wing for 5 days. He got his chest tubes out around day 19 in the ICU, finally improvement. A nurse put him on a CPAP to see if the oxygen would help with the wheezing and trouble breathing, it seemed to help. Finally, day 22 he is going to be moved to the cardiac wing, which was great because in the ICU you can't just get up and walk, there is an alarm on the bed and people need to help you up, he could only walk around once a day, so not much movement, only to get up for the bathroom or to sit in a chair. I was told in the cardiac wing he would have freedom to move around, go to the bathroom on his own, brush his teeth, comb his hair, clean himself, and they could monitor his motor functions. Instead, less than 24 hours after leaving the ICU, they said he didn't qualify for the hospital rehab and that he was being discharged. I asked why and they said he was fine, but I could appeal if I wanted to. I asked about the oxygen he was on, they said he didn't need it, and he was fine. That was not the case, his wheezing was horrible once he got home, he couldn't sleep because he couldn't breathe, and after a couple days he couldn't sit back anymore, he never made it to his first Dr Cable PA appointment after the surgery. I believe if they would have kept him the 5 days in the cardiac unit like Dr Cable said they would do, instead of a rush discharge, they would have found out that something was not right, instead my dad passed away. My dad had good insurance and the total bill came in well over $400,000. I mentioned that Dr Cable never called my sister nor my dad's physician back, but his office did call when he missed his first appointment, unfortunately my dad did not live that long."
"Before I start my review, I'd like to just say that my family has a very long history with this hospital. I was born here. My sister was born here. Two of my grandparents died here. And sadly, it is also where most recently my father died as well. After the way things unfolded, I will never be a patient anywhere near this hospital again and I highly suggest others avoid it as well. The people of the UP deserve better, and it's a real shame that there aren't many options. It still does not forgive the very unfortunate sequence of events that cost my father his life, nor the response from the hospital network and doctors that left me speechless not to mention decimated my family. There might be people who are unaware of just what low quality care is and has been historically provided by this hospital. That's because the system that is in place under the guise of keeping costs low does little to nothing to protect the public at large. Gross incompetence and negligence are routinely swept under the rug as long as profits keep rolling in. The hospital as a whole has received "D" ratings. Would you eat at a restaurant that barely passed inspection and eked by with a D? Now imagine being at your most vulnerable and placing your life in the hands of a D rated organization. The people of Marquette are kept in the dark. This isn't to say that everyone at the hospital is bad or malicious. There are genuinely caring people there that are just unfortunately vastly outnumbered by the ones with long histories of Malpractice hidden from patients. When my father died (due to an error made by the staff) I was given the runaround for days. I was unable to get my father from the morgue because doctors, so eager to circle the wagons and escape blame, refused to sign a death certificate. In Michigan, a body can't be moved until one is issued. By law it's supposed to be within 24 hours, but for an entire week doctors and staff avoided me. I showed up and camped out waiting to get one of them to sign to release my dad to a funeral home. In the end a patient advocate got a doctor to finally fill one out. It shouldnt really bother me as much as it does but she filled it out wrong, listing a ridiculous cause and then only electronically signed it. The primary doctor on my father's case wrote in his chart that he made a full recovery. The staggering insensitivity would have been devastating if I hadnt already been so emotionally numb and sleep deprived from camping outside offices and pleading with anyone in any office that would listen. Don't make the same mistake. Please reconsider going anywhere near this hospital if you can avoid it. I never thought I would say something like that about the place where I entered the world, but there it is. My family deserved better. My dad deserved better. The people of Marquette deserve better."
"My brother was admitted on Thurs into icu,, by the way he's a prisoner, for aspiration pneumonia since then have been unable to get updates and just had a very rude nurse on 6th fl at 10:30 am actually hang up on me. Apparently if their prisoners family don't deserve the courtesy others are accorded. I understand it's a holiday weekend but still believe we deserve common courtesy and sympathy"
"Dr. Cable & his team did an excellent job when they performed a triple bypass on me in July. The nurses on the 4th floor were outstanding & extremely nice, knowledgeable, & accommodating. I am now in Cardiac Rehab and, once again, I am very pleased with the care & help I am getting; they are professional, concerned with my improvement, friendly, and they listen to my concerns. Cardiac Rehab is vital to my recovery & the staff is wonderful!"
"I want to say thank you to all the wonderful nurses and other medical staff in the ICU that has been taking care of my grandson who was in a vehicle accident and was seriously injured. These nurses kept the family updated at all times and explained everything to us. They were very knowledgeable and kind and compassionate Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. You guys are amazing."
