Reviews of Harbor Oaks Hospital
"My son is currently in here and he comes home tomorrow. None of the staff except for his social worker has given me any information about phone calls. The first week of his stay I was told that he could receive calls from 2-4pm but then when I try to I’m told that he can make calls after dinner but he can’t receive calls. The fact that they are so okay with cutting family out of the kids’s lives makes it horrible for me. I tried to schedule video visits and so did my ex husband and we never received links. At least at pine rest we were able to see him and talk to him on our timing. I think this place needs new policies."
"I am so upset and stressed out at the way this facility is handling an incident that took place on 12/22/2023. My son (who is eleven) was jumped by a few other patients while he was sitting in the recreation room (tv room). He never fought back, nor did he say or scream anything vulgar back like these other kids were. He is being heavily medicated and that’s the only reason as to why he didn’t defend himself. He was punched in the stomach and his arm repeatedly until the nurse came running down the hall to his aid and separated the boys. Where was the staff? The nurses job is to stay at their station to answer calls, administer medication, hand out snacks, and many other tasks. There is assigned staff that is supposed to be there monitoring the kids closely. The only reason I know what happened is because the nurse called me immediately after it happened like protocol states. Luckily, these facilities have cameras and I will be trying my best to obtain the footage. I brought my son here for help during a mental break down and within three days time he is being harmed and attacked, instead of helped and protected. I called the very next day on 12/23/2023 seeking assistance and answers and the operator gave me the run around and refused to give me her name. Then instead of actually placing me on hold she sets the phone down and I can overhear her saying to her coworker “I’m still having problems with her”. Her coworker responds with “tell her it’s the holiday weekend”. She responds with “I already did”. Then the coworker states “I’ll just talk to her”. That woman claims to be a nurse named Sherri. She jumps on the phone with an attitude and asks “why are you calling?” I have to restate everything again about the incident that took place with my son. I told her that I didn’t like the way she and her coworker were speaking poorly of me and laughing about the entire situation. Sherri didn’t deny it and then became more agitated and verbally aggressive stating that I cannot do anything about removing my son from this unsafe environment or get any answers about what happened until Tuesday because all the doctors and social workers are gone until then. Sherri seemed more interested in finding out about the nurse that called me to inform me about the incident instead of listening and caring about the best course of action. I didn’t yell, disrespect, or say anything vulgar to Sherri and she didn’t like the way I was speaking in a firm tone. She interrupts me and threatens that she will disconnect the call because I am screaming at her, which was completely false. As I am trying to explain the situation from my point of view she just hangs up on me. I am almost 20 weeks pregnant, hormonal, severely worried, concerned to no end, and now extremely stressed out over my son’s physical well-being, overall safety, his mental state, and many other factors. First off, what nurse is working as the operator who directs calls to where they need to go? Secondly, since when did it became a problem for a concerned parent to call and inquire about safety and security purposes, policies, and protocols? Thirdly, why is it okay for operators to make fun of, mock, speak down to, treat parents like they don’t matter, and hang up on them? Not soon after this took place, I get a call from a day nurse named Jennifer. That didn’t go well either and thank goodness I recorded that phone call. She’s calling because they want consent to put my son on Zoloft. I said no and she asks why? I said he is already on 4 other medications. Then I tell her about the incident and she openly admits that she was never informed of any incident or saw any report written up. I am completely baffled as to how communication between staff has failed immensely. I tell her that I no longer want my son medicated. She informs me that there could be dire consequences to him just stopping meds. It’s only been 3 days if that since he started taking them. More importantly, why was I not informed about this prior to consenting to medication for my child? SEEK TREATMENT ELSEWHERE!"
"I went here about two weeks ago for anger management issues and came out literally traumatized in harbor oaks adolescence unit. I had absolutely all my rights stripped from me I was told upon entry that I would be there for about 3 days if I did everything I was supposed to leading up to that I was in there 7 days even tho I did EVERY group session never had a single issue with everyone minded my own business and did all I was told I was supposed to be there for 2 weeks but my mom after multiple attempts of trying to get me out of there finally got to take me home. Coming out I felt just drained and empty i never felt so alone in harbor oaks and the only sense of life I had in there were the kids that I made friends with that upon leaving we were not allowed to keep conversation with. The food is absolutely terrible we're locked out of our rooms all day except for one hour in the afternoon the blinds and windows are always closed and it's extremely draining. I felt like I had zero rights in harbor oaks and it honestly just broke me I came in with anger management problems and came out extremely mentally drained. I came out with intense anxiety issues due to constant screaming and crying of other people I had to sleep every night with earplugs just because of the noise. If your considering sending your family here I urge of you to consider outpatient treatment first. I could go on for hours about how much this place mentally effected me."
"I am a 19 year old girl who suffers from depression and anxiety, and was discharged from this facility yesterday. It was the worst thing I have ever been through. I cry as I write this because reliving the trauma of the place is painful. Please do not send your child, spouse, parent, friend, any loved one to this horrible and unsafe facility. The environment is not conducive and not safe. I can tell of multiple traumas I’ve experienced in my week there but one that sticks out to me is my discussion with Mary the PA. I stated “I don’t feel safe here” and tried to explain about fights breaking out all around me, and she told me “we’re going to double the dosage on your medication”. If you don’t take the medication you don’t get to leave, and even if you walk through in perfect health they will keep you for a week so they can charge you for it. They say 72 hours, and I checked myself into the facility, but that number is a falsity. My parents called for hours with no answer until my dad finally came to the facility to try to talk to someone. Even he couldn’t help against the corruption and fraudulence that takes place in the facilities walls. I was in fact unsafe, and the day after doubling my dose I was sitting down with a book where I found myself clocked in the face by a patient running to attack another. That patient was my roommate, and remained my roommate. They claim you see a psychiatrist every day, this is another lie. They will change you for it but you only see them on day one to prescribe medication. If you try to say otherwise it is your word against there’s and they will act like you are crazy. This facility gave me trauma I have to work through, and the one thing I learned is that people in this world lack empathy and prioritize money over life. Even doctors whose jobs and oath stand on the morals of the opposite."
"Omg! Elizabeth was so amazing and made me feel like a person rather than a number. She made me feel that Harbor Oaks was the best place for me and she answered all my questions before she hung up. She was delightful and happy and I truly felt cared about. She is the sole reason I entered rehab for my alcoholism. God Bless you Elizabeth!"
