Reviews of Allegan County Animal Shelter
"After reading many many NEGATIVE reviews, I decided to add to this because of the experience my family went through with them. My daughter’s dog slipped out and was picked up by animal control. My kids were frantic trying to find her and finally found that she was brought to the animal shelter. The lady told my daughter that the dog had been hit by a car and needed surgery to survive .. if she would even make it. They showed her to my daughter but the dog was covered up with a sheet like she was in some sort of morgue. They told her she would have to pay for the surgery herself or sign her rights off to her and they would have their vet take care of the procedures. Well, after tears and a long thought decision she did sign the paperwork to get the dog help. Low and behold, the same dog was posted for adoption the following Monday, four days later. Miraculously survived.. I called to inquire (pretending I knew nothing of this dog) and they told me that she was surrendered the family had too many kids and had no time for her. I filled out an application and they too called the references.. no problems found except that I had an elderly dog and they wouldn’t let me adopt another animal because my dog was not fixed. Last I knew, two female dogs can’t have babies together. So then, my daughter in law inquired. We went to see the dog, I checked her over completely and not a scratch from being hit by the car. At this same visit, they told us that she was surrendered by a woman that was taking care of her disabled brother. How is it that all of these negative reviews can be made and not one investigation on the ethics of this place? You are not allowed to go in the building to see any of the animals. They bring them out to you.. if you meet their standards. I get it that there are people that don’t take care of their animals but please, these people are pathological liars. I have had animals all my life. Lived and worked on a farm around all types of animals. This dog was in no way ever hit by a car. There is no possible way to recover from this in a matter of a couple days. If you want to see animals and adopt, take a drive up to the Ottawa County Harbor Humane Society. You can see them, visit with them and even possibly volunteer to help. Allegan should be shut down!!"
"Tried to take my dog here to have him sheltered due to his attitude at home. Very good dog, just didn’t get along with only one of my others. But aside from all of that. I asked if they had room to shelter and because they don’t have open kennels they said they would just end up putting him down like the rest when they have no kennels. So before you come here. Think if they have room before dropping your babys off just to be killed. This place is sick and needs shut down!"
"My 2 dogs slipped out while putting food away and was caught! Was told it was 200 for each and 25a day! Told them I need 2 weeks cause biweekly paid and have called everyday!! Now they have went out of there wayy to fix my dog and sell them when willing to pay!!! Lady so rude and told my family we can not see our dog and they put it on social media well forgive me for not being on fb etc or the faceted that someone can just out buy us with our family pet! No place to have"
"I love volunteering with Wishbone Pet Rescue, which operates the shelter. Everyone here is very kind and has a passion for helping animals; they are very diligent in making sure that adopters are a good match with potential animals, and they do so much work to make sure that their animals are getting the best chance at being adopted into good homes."
"We adopted Moss just over 3 weeks ago renamed him Charlie. He was 9 weeks old when we brought him home and in the 3 weeks I can't even say it was accidents but he's only pottied and pooped in the house three times never expected a puppy like this from a shelter. was almost potty trained when we brought him home. The staff is excellent and really care about the animals that they have there up for adoption would recommend to all my friends and family"
