About the James P. Covell Nature Preserve
The James P. Covell Nature Preserve is a beautiful park located at 2727 County Road 52 in Auburn, Indiana, United States. This preserve spans 2,700 feet along Cedar Creek's west bank and was generously donated by Dr. Jack Covell to preserve his late brother's land for the local wildlife.
The preserve features a variety of habitats, including 40 acres of agricultural land, 33 acres of emerging upland forest, and 23 acres of mature forested floodplain. The property is home to a diverse array of wildlife, such as wild turkeys, great blue herons, belted kingfishers, minks, otters, and more. Some of the trees in the preserve are over 150 years old.
ACRES Land Trust is currently working on restoring the farm fields, planting native hardwood trees, and transforming part of the preserve into a wetland with tall grasses. ACRES Land Trust is a nonprofit organization supported by over 2,000 members who are dedicated to protecting natural and working lands in northeast Indiana, southern Michigan, and northwest Ohio. The preserve offers free public access to its trail systems, which are open from dawn to dusk daily.

Reviews of James P. Covell Nature Preserve
"Excellent 3/4 mile trail for a stroll in the woods. Trees, creek, nature."
"Small woods by Cedar Creek with a nice path. Only real negative is the frequent sound of gun shots from the nearby shooting range. May be a problem for some sensitive dogs."
"Very nice. We saw butterflies, a woodpecker, dragonflies, and a centipede. It was relaxing to hear and see the river. We brought our dog he seemed to like it also."
"This nature preserve is honestly one of the best places to go for a short hike in the area. The trail is just long enough to warrant coming solely for this trail alone, but is short enough to finish within 45 minutes. Going right next to Cedar Creek gives one-of-a-kind sights, and the place is especially lovely close to the fall, when the beans in the field next to the preserve are fully grown!"
"Great area to hike with my girls. Quiet and peaceful."
