Reviews of Fort Hill Earthworks & Nature Preserve
"Neat park with cool history. The trail is STEEP, fairly strenuous and slick from leaves and wet. Some trees to climb over from wind damage. Worth doing if you are physically able. The loop is about 2.2 miles and almost half is up hill. Lots of parking, primitive bathrooms and a stunning shelter house."
"This is another great state preserve in Ohio. There are several trails here, and with the layout being what it is, you can cover a good chunk of miles if you take on each one. The gorge trail is especially nice. The trails are also well marked with signs at the intersections, making it impossible to lose your way here. Tons and tons of wildflowers. There's ample parking and restrooms. You may want to bring bug spray if you come in the summer. Great place, I'll be coming back here."
"I was disappointed with this site. Our purpose for visiting was to see the earthworks, as we were checking out as many of the ancient mounds and earthworks in the area as possible as we were traveling through southern Ohio. We read from the reviews that there were excellent hiking trails, picnic area and an educational center near the parking lot, and a 2.5 mile trail to the earthworks. We were excited to hike the trail. We were surprised when we arrived on a Wednesday morning that the area look abandoned. The educational center was closed, the picnic area was a bit run down, the restrooms were in bad shape and the hiking trails were not marked. There was an interpretive sign about the earthworks, the preserve, and a map of the trails. Unfortunately our time was limited, so we did not hike to the earthworks since the only trail marker I could find was for the Buckeye trail, and the trail near the interpretive sign was unmarked. I'm sure it would have been would great if we had just planned to hike and had time to explore but we had many better managed ancient mound sites to visit."
"A hidden little gem if you like to walk trails. The shortest trail is a little over a mile and a lot of uphill parts so be ready for that. It’s a nice pretty walk through the woods the keeps you cool. If you have dogs it’s a good trail for them to go on with you. I would suggest a good pair of shoes since it is all through the woods and the paths are mostly mud or rocks. Can’t wait to try another trail next time."
"I've been wanting to go to Fort Hill for awhile. I've read reviews of the trails and they all had good reviews. I took the Gorge Trail. It was about 3/4 of a mile before you see anything that looks like a gorge trail and then it is there. I didn't expect it to be as beautiful as it is. The rock formations are stunning. The creek is scenic and flows quickly. Th trail is moderate to difficult and there are some streams to cross and a few fallen trees to maneuver around. Then you see a cabin or old schoolhouse that you walk through because the trail actually goes through it.Interesting to say the least. I found the Gorge Trail to be challenging at times but well worth it.I would like to hike the other trails at Fort Hill."
