"We originally came to this hospital 6 years ago. I was traveling as a welder and my wife was a stay at home mom. We adopted our oldest daughter at 5 years old. She's now 10 years old. I get a frantic call from my wife, that our daughter has had a seizure. She was rushed to our local county hospital where they found fluid in her brain. She was rushed from the local county hospital to Riley. This happened June 2017. I was coming home from Oklahoma. When my wife called I stopped in Missouri for the night. She said it's serious you need to get home. Long story short I drive 90-100 mph all the way from Columbia Mo to Riley. Neuro team said main cause of the fluid is a brain tumor. I'm freaking out. I get there at the hospital around 3:30 am. Gear bags and all. I'm ushered to my daughters room. I met the neurosurgeon Dr. Jay. He was a great guy. He told us what was going on. Showed us all the images etc. We had limited background on our daughter, and discovered that she had a traumatic brain injury. She had scarring in the ventricles of her brain. They went in and drilled those out. Dr. Jay said everything went well, and they wanted to see her every 6 months to keep a close eye on everything to make sure her spinal fluid drained properly. We were happy. Dr. Jay leaves, turns out daughters case over. Fast forward to 2020. Our daughter is 3 years post surgery. She has another seizure. I was there to catch her. We rush her again to our local ER. The put her in a CT scan. They find fluid, they call Riley, the ambulance her to Riley ER. They run test and turn her loose. Dr. Jay had told us if she had any complications they would put a shunt in her brain to help the fluid flow. With Dr. Jay gone, no shunt was placed. Continued visits, daughter has migraines, we get no answers. Fast forward to 2023, my daughter is now 16. She blacks out, out of the shower. Busts her head on the tub. This time I bypass the local ER and go straight to Riley ER. 8 hours later she gets an MRI 11 hours in, MRI is read, 1 hour we are sent home. Now today, she's had 2 seizures within 6 days. Was rushed to the ER from church, ventricles in her brain are swollen, local ER finds it on their scan, they call Riley, Riley says they don't want to see her. Told the local ER staff, if we don't hear from them by Wednesday, we needed to call Riley. We've still yet to hear from them. We have an almost 17 year old, who has no drivers license, who has a general fear of doing too much because she doesn't know when that switch will be flipped and the lights go out. We haven't gotten any answers. We want our daughter to have a normal teenage life, and healthy adult life, free from any set backs. We feel like she should have had the shunt put in, and we would be better off. We're just not impressed with the lackadaisical attitude. I guess we are heading to Cincinnati Children's. Because we're not a fan of Peyton Manning either."
"Waiting hours are already long. The nurses were quick to send us home didn’t even check to see if my daughter fever went down just because she started talking a little after some zophren they sent us back home with her still vomiting and a fever ."
"My experience here was awful. I enjoyed the way the nurses cared for the children and the doctors were fantastic. Everyone truly cared and that was amazing. My problem was the organization, non medical personnel, and all around condition of the hospital. The communication was horrible. We had nurses and doctors all giving us different and conflicting information. Our surgery was over 3 hours behind. Also, afterwards we were at one point told we were ready for discharge and then shortly after a resident entered and stated he thought we should stay over night. The nurse then brought us paperwork for discharge, then we had to explain the situation. He then stated he had no idea and was told that we were good to go. We then waited an hour before he was able to find the resident and speak with him. They then proceeded to tell us that we should stay. We agreed and then waited two hours to be put into a room. The room was filthy. The family waiting room was a disaster. Any staff that was not medical personnel was rude as could be. We went down to the cafe to get food and when we were checking out the lady didn’t say a word. We didn’t know it was self check out. Instead of explaining this, all she said was “you gonna scan it or…” needless to say I wasn’t excited about her help. The staff in this place is very unfriendly and avoid helping you in any way."
"I was a patient at this hospital when I had Wilms tumor very one was nice to me. The nurses never made any major mistakes and even the minor mistakes were fixed right away. My doctor was extremely nice and got my tumor out without any issues I am not sure why this place isn’t 5 stars and only 3.6 which makes me really sad because this hospital was great to me and my family and saved my life."
