Reviews of UH Westlake Wound Care & Hyperbaric Medicine
"I was sent here by my primary physician due to a leg ulcer (half inch in size). In 4 visits (thankfully) I was was done. The medical side, appointment scheduling, nurses, doctor were fine. The major decrease in rating (stars) is due to the billing. I am being billed a total of almost $1,200 - for 4 visits. No equipment used, no special medicine used/applied, nothing. They wiped the leg off with a damp, warm cloth (water), applied lignocaine and wrapped the calf up in a bandage (brown wrap - similar to what you get at Walgreen's), applied a piece of form over it (so the bandage doesn't get loose) and gave me a nylon to put over (for aesthetics). That's it. I have attempted to contest these charges to no avail. I'm contending that "common sense" indicates these billings do not coincide, or even come close, with the treatment done/performed. There is no way I can contend that each 15 minute visit was anywhere near $400 worth of service. I understand medical costs are truly "out of control" but, in this case, I truly do not understand the amount billed to what was performed. In the future, I may waste an initial visit but I'll have to ask up front what do the charges look like they will be, to prevent this."
"The doctor that took care of my wound was great and one of the nurses was super nice but the nurse that usually answers the phone is so super mean. I literally had anxiety attacks when I'd have to call for appointments. She acts as if you're putting her out by calling and takes a very rude attitude and makes you feel so small. She also doesnt care about hurting you. After my numbing agent wore off she was super rough squeezing my wound while roughly dressing it. I took it for a while then asked if she could not press directly on the wound and she said, "you're fine". I dont go there anymore. It's unfortunate because I liked the doctor but the nurse is just too scary."
"My husband and I can not say enough about the staff and doctors they are beyond wonderful. With the care and support they offer is like we were all one big caring family. After about 12 weeks of care I'm healed and got to ring the big healed bell. He's going to miss them girls."
"My mother had a terrrible experience at this center. Michelle the receptionist is rude and rather mean. Stephanie the nurse ignores you and talks in a sharp manner. I have to say Rachel the PA is fantastic caring and a very good practitioner as well as Maria is a very good practioner. It is unfortunate that the others made us feel unwelcome and it was very disappointing since my mother had a very bad wound. Medical providers need to realize that patients are humans and need to be treated with decency and care. I would not go to this center again due to the rude and offensive treatment of our family by the staff. I found a new wound center."
"Our family had a terrible and traumatic experience with Dr. Steven Craig Pearse. In summary, my mother, who is in her 70's, left his office feeling as if a stranger with a knife had just attacked her, causing her excruciating pain in the moment, and for weeks to follow. I took her to see Dr. Steven Craig Pearse at the Westlake Wound Care & Hyperbaric Medicine Center, in Westlake, OH, simply to get a second opinion by a wound care specialist. We were seeking information only, about alternate treatments, such as hyperbaric oxygen treatment. Our referring physician, an infectious disease doctor, told us to not allow any scraping/debridement of the wound, as this could delay the healing process. We clearly communicated to Rachel, one of Dr. Pearse's nurses, that we did not want any scraping or debridement done to the wound. Just before the doctor came into the room, we could hear them discussing this concern in the hallway. When Dr. Pearse came into the room, he barely spoke to us, sat down to look at the wound, then, without any warning, proceeded to take a sharp instrument and debride the wound (cutting away at her skin), causing my mother to scream out in pain. I continued to tell the medical team in the room that we did not want any debridement, but Dr. Pearse ignored me and my mother's screams, and continued cutting, and my mother continued screaming. He had no regard for the pain he was causing my mother and no regard for her wishes to not be cut. Simply because someone has an MD at the end of their name, does not give them the right to assault someone they call a patient. Dr. Pearse gave us zero warning as to what he was going to do, ESPECIALLY knowing that he was going to do the exact procedure we specifically repeated that we did not want done. In my opinion, this man should not be allowed to go near patients. He should have been arrested for assaulting my mother. Most of the staff at this University Hospital Westlake Wound Care Center behaved unprofessionally. After the doctor finished torturing my mother and rushed out of the room, Nurse Stephanie wrapped my mother's leg so tight it caused her more pain. We called the office later to ask questions since they rushed us out of there, and Nurse Marian was extremely rude and defensive over the phone and showed no regard for the pain my mother was in from their treatment. I wouldn't send my worst enemy here for treatment. Be advised that Dr. Steven Craig Pearse practices not only with University Hospital, but with the Cleveland Clinic Wound Care as well. This man needs to be thoroughly investigated for treating my mother in such an inhumane manner. In addition, be cautious of what you're signing when they check you in. They had my mother electronically sign her documents and just verbally explained what she was signing. They're required to give you copies, but when we asked for them later, they wouldn't supply them. Some of the documents turned out to be marketing documents for them to use her name, photos, health information, etc. for marketing purposes with the general public. After getting the copies from the medical records office, it clearly states that the patient must be given a copy, however they refused to do so when we asked the office staff at the wound care center. After a 4 month process working with the UH Patient Advocate department, there is no evidence that Dr. Pearse has admitted to any wrongdoing. It appears as if he feels justified with his actions. This is extremely concerning because I never want this to happen to any other patient again. Any physician with an attitude toward patient treatment that prioritizes the doctor's ego over clear communication with the patient is dangerous to the community."
