Reviews of Laurels of DeKalb
"My uncle spent few weeks at Laurels of Dekalb and the level of care he received was unbelievable. My uncle is 86 years old and speaks very little English. Even with the language barrier they made his stay extremely pleasant and comfortable. My wife is in social work field and even she was amazed by the staff and facility. If my uncle ever needs to go to another facility for physical therapy we will most definitely go back to Laurels of Dekalb. I will never forget the level of care and understanding that the staff provided."
"Just wanted to share our experience so others are aware before they make a decision - Unsympathetic, insensitive, and uncompassionate... these are the words I would use to describe the staff, especially the upper management at the Laurels of Dekalb in Butler, IN. My grandfather arrived late on a Friday night direcly from the hospital after suffering a stroke(3 days prior) and was placed in their care; as we heard good things about their "Memory Unit." The hospital for some reason took him off his "happy" pill upon arrival and by Wednesday "Upper Management" wanted to send him to Toledo Ohio for a psychological evaluation in a mental hospital; that could potentially keep him for 30 days. During the 5 days he was there, before they required that we send him away, he was moved 3 times, his medications were messed with from the beginning and nobody knew who he was (NO ONE ever invited us in for his personal care plan discussion that they said would happen 72 hrs. after he arrived). We met with "Upper Management" to ask them to give him time to adjust, and they would not let us speak at all. One of the directors (Angie Dunakin) was asked twice (once by myself and once by my mother) to stop speaking over me and to let me finish speaking. The rest of the directors just sat there and pretty much let Angie do all the talking. Angie was very rude. She needs to learn to listen to her patients and their families to create a welcoming environment so they can all work towards one goal... the patient and their well-being! My mother and I walked away with a feeling that no one at the Laurels of Dekalb cared. My grandfather is a 89 year old Marine Veteran; he fought for the freedom for all such as Angie Dunakin and all those women that sat at that table but not one of them was willing to fight for him!! NOT ONE! Not one would even listen to our reasoning and it was a very justifiable reason as to why he needed more time to adapt! The Laurels of Dekalb just wanted to send him away to be medicated. I worked as a caretaker for my grandfather as well as my sister did along with many strangers that came into his home as caretakers for the past year and we never felt the need to send him away. So why did the Laurels of Dekalb feel the need to send him away after 5 days of being at their facility??? They knew nothing about him!!! **I am here to tell you all...It's not a bad thing to love someone too much to want to fight for them. We removed my grandfather from Laurels of Dekalb and placed him in another facility. We REFUSE to put my 89 year old grandfather through something that isn't necessary...please remember your rights and remember that you DON'T have to do what they suggest!"
"My grandmother was here for care. We were very pleased with the therapy department, and her quick return home."
"An awesome experience for my dad in rehab. Three months and everyone feels like family! Thank you for everything you folks do."
"The administration and staff were very professional friendly. Meals were excellent (big portions though). Rehab was number one on getting dad moving/stronger again."
