"Covington Latin School by its nature is not for everyone. Find the right school for your child. Before coming to Latin School, we and our son, James know that the school expectations and demands from the parents and students are very high. We are proud that James made the right decision to choose Covington Latin School where he was challenged, supported, prepared, and flourished academically, spiritually, and socially. It was a perfect fit for him! Covington Latin School is a place of high learning. The teachers, staff, and administrator are highly qualified educators and dedicated to the student's learning They go and beyond ... to educate our students; so as parents, we need to do our part. James just graduated from Latin School this week feeling accomplished. THANK YOU COVINGTON LATIN SCHOOL!"
"As an Alumnus I too have to disagree with the poor reviews. The intent of the school is to challenge students and there is ample support. I’m a perfect example. I scored very high on the entrance exam which was more of a basic IQ/aptitude type test when I took it. This was not a surprise as I always did well on those standardized tests. Where I did struggle was with math. I had only a couple good math teachers in grade school and could see early in freshman year that I was behind my peers. The teacher saw this too and worked to bring me up to speed as well as to steer me into the mid-level course instead of the advanced courses there. Never once did I feel a lack of support. In the end I graduted early and CLS gave me a great head start on the rest of my life. By its very nature the school is not for everyone. Students and parents need to know that going in and plan accordingly. Unfortunately there were some students in my class that were probably “forced” to go there by their parents who may not have been the best candidates even though they passed the exam. While the school can try to help in the end it’s up to all parties to ensure success. Don’t expect the school to carry that entire burden."
"Students are "getting themselves into" more than anticipated when they embark on the Cov Lat endeavor. Many fail to acknowledge the empty claims on which the school has built itself. Far too many brilliant young minds enter the school with this notion that it will get them into the college of their dreams. Actually, when applying for a college, don't be surprised if admissions laughs in your face when you tell them that you should be a student because your parents paid for you to go to a rich white kid school. If anything, the school's work levels cause lower GPAs, making it much more difficult to get into colleges, and the high stress can limit extracurricular activities that colleges are ever so fond of. But it's worth it, right? Because no college can deny you if you spent too much money and time on a privileged, Catholic school."
"There are many good qualities about the school and some definite downsides. On the positive side, the school is true to its Catholic identity. Prayer and weekly mass are part of the schedule. There are many talented teachers. It is a safe environment where the students are not concerned about clothing labels and the social scene. Dances are most often attended "dateless" and there is virtually no peer pressure related to the typical teenage behaviors of concern. The students are good kids and follow the rules. Downsides to consider: Quite a few very smart kids do not make it to graduation. The workload is intense - Juniors and Seniors can expect more homework than a full-time college student. Grades largely depend on homework assignments, where teachers have a great deal of latitude in scoring. Many of the teachers have only taught at Latin school and some make it harder than it needs to be - like running the gauntlet. Students get a great education, but it comes at the price of the fun high school experience that students at other schools enjoy. Caution - life after Latin: If a student does not make it or decides he/she does not like Latin school, it is difficult to go elsewhere since there is an age disparity. Latin school students are 1-2 years younger than average for their grade level. Despite graduating intelligent, well-schooled students, the vast majority of Latin school students do not venture beyond local colleges. The graduates are young and may not be ready to go away for college. Also, the level of assistance in college placement is severely lacking. The school does not have the resources to provide college admissions help for students. Other college prep schools have guidance departments that play a significant role in helping students with college placement; this is not the case at Latin school."
"This is the best Catholic high school in Greater Cincinnati. I realize that's a tall statement. I'm not originally from Cincinnati, so I believe I can be more objective about these things. I don't have a dog in the hunt, as they say. But after twenty years living here, I'm convinced this is the best school to send your Catholic kids to. The Catholic identity and formation of the human person is outstanding. The academic challenges are exceptional, and the smaller community is wonderful. If you want big sports, boosters, stadiums, and such, it's not the school for you. But if educating your child and keeping your Catholic Faith in the family is a top priority, then Covington Latin shines well above all others."
