Reviews of Northwestern Local School District
"Not a very welcoming school for new people in the community. If you don't have name brand clothes, have your own style you're just not expected. We had high hope moving from the city. Hoping the kids would be more humbling, friendly and welcoming to new students. They just aren't. Bullying is the norm here with nothing being done, they didn't care nor make any effort to help a new student feel welcomed."
"A great school with good people,. A small element of the population has political control of the school, and until recently, had bad boards of educational and political chaos like suspending the superintendent of school while an investigation triggered by the high school principal and two board members,. resulted in a costly investigation. The two members who started the investigation, are no longer on the board. The current board, sans one member ,appears to be solid and effective. For many years the district had the reputation, "The community runs the school", causing many good school administrators to avoid applying for any position. That has changed for the best and the "old guard" appears to have moved out of the need to dictate personnel and policy, and safe guards are in place to prevent mob gatherings which were once a part of the operation of the school. At one time, organized lynch mobs were prevalent at board meetings targeting employees, especially principals or employees in visible positions. While these meetings happen in schools, Northwestern had more than their share of them. Some employees were told the "were not accepted by the community". At one time a teacher, had more community influence in the board of education because nothing was done to stop these kind of power grabs before they became out of hand. Sadly, while the academic standards have fared well compared to the county, they were not what they once were. The major sports programs are a major disappointment however as losing traditions are prevalent in both basketball and football. Fortunately, the school personnel have done a remarkable job in light of the historic history of political chaos that once was a regular part of the Northwestern school operation."
"Graduated from here in 81 and now I have grandkids going here! Grandson plays football and basketball here! Go Warriors!!"
"I have found this school to be great for our children in comparison to Springfield city schools. They provide busing which is perfect for those who lack transportation. The school offers a lot of activities for family's as well as students. They have bowling, soccer, football, volleyball and many more sports and extracurricular activities. The school is also K-12 grades which is good as well for families who have children in different grades instead of going to several buildings in town all your children are in the same area which is also good if you lack transportation. The teachers and staff have been great with our children they are very patient and understanding ecspecially to those who have special needs or a disability, they off IEPs and 504 plans for those students in need. Finally the staff and teachers communicate often with parents which is very important in my opinion and they keep us parents informed on everything."
"Unfortunately most low start comments are students. As a parent I would highly recommend NW. The community has come tog ether to help create and support a wonderful school."
