Reviews of Select Specialty Hospital - Northern Kentucky
"Staff is very courteous and professional. I would highly recommend for family or a friend."
"Our mom arrived to Select Specialty Hospital after 2 long months at an ICU at another hospital that was unable to successfully get her off the ventilator. Multiple attempts were made by the first hospital and each time they were unable to wean her off the ventilator, the explanation was that "her lungs are too fibrotic, like rubber, like leather." In fact, several doctors there told us that they believed that our mother would never be able to come off the ventilator and would need a nursing home capable of handling ventilators for the rest of her life. Well, fortunately, we believed otherwise. Namely, we believed in God Who was able to work a miracle and with the help of the staff at Select Specialty Hospital, today, our mother is off the ventilator and is breathing on her own and going through intense physical therapy to get strong again. We are very grateful for the love and mercy of our Heavenly Father for prolonging our mother's life and for all of the staff at Select for the work they do and bless each of them in the name of Jesus Christ the Savior, Lord and King."
"This place is awful my dad was a fighter and wanted to live even fought and recovered from being on a ventilator at St Elizabeth. He was getting better but not fast enough so insurance would not let him stay any longer so he had no choice not even 2 days after being transferred here he was bullied and belittled by the staff they ignored him mistreated him to the point he said he just wanted to die because we couldn’t get him moved fast enough no one should get treated like this they stole his Will to live and it makes me so mad he was an Army Veteran and it’s sad that he felt so helpless and hopeless he has never been a complainer it breaks my heart that he had to pass away here where no one cared about him. Do whatever you can to keep your loved ones from coming here I wish I could have done something to keep him from being sent here ."
"Update: My daughter's case manager took my name & number and gave it to the CEO. She promised he would get back with me in regards to my complaints. She explained he was out of town at a meeting, but assured me she would ask him to make contact. Well to my surprise he called. He was attentive and appeared caring. He held a phone conference that included himself, the Dir. of Nursing, and the Interim Dir. of Quality Management & Dir. of Infection Control. They patiently listened to my complaints, answered my questions and explained protocol & procedures. The CEO & the Dir. of Nursing gave my daughter and myself their personal contact numbers. We were told to contact either of them with any further incidents. After speaking with them, both met my daughter and I later during my visit after our phone call. Both have been in their positions for less than six months. Both seem to be very caring, very concerned people. The Dir. was called several times this week due to incidences with a couple of bad nurses. The CEO & the Dir. of Nursing were prompt in taking care of the situations immediately as promised. The CEO told us he didn't want to be a good hospital. He wants to be the best. He said he knows he has to hear the good, bad and ugly to achieve this goal. He and the Dir. of Nursing, so far, have not made us or our complaints feel unwelcomed. Our concerns were quickly addressed and solutions were made. It is my hope that the CEO's goal of being one of the best hospitals is well on the way under his caring, compassionate leadership, and the Dir. of Nursing's management of the nursing staff. My daughter and I found the therapists, CNA's, and housekeeping very thorough, thoughtful and friendly. Hopefully, they will get rid of the bad apples for more rewarding experiences, for content, comfortable patients. I changed the rating from a 1 star to a 3 star rating due to upper management's positive response. Will be monitoring future reviews for signs of continued improvement. Original review below: Staff at this LTACH hospital are very rude and condescending. They are also very unaccommodating for out of town family members. No lists of hotels/motels in the area, and no discounted rates for family members of their patients. When calling for status reports (once or twice a day), the reception staff seem to be in a hurry to get off the phone, and sound bothered by calls. My daughter is extremely unhappy there, and so is my family. Don't allow your family members to go here. Will be making my first visit soon next week and will update this review if needed."
"My husband was admitted to Select Specialty Hospital Northern KY on June 5th we were told he needed too much oxygen to go to a skilled care facility from the hospital. We had no choice in the matter except which Select Specialty Hospital he would go to. Although they claim they will set up a meeting between family and staff immediately it took me asking and 4 days. At the meeting, they promise to keep me informed that did not happen unless I called and asked questions. I asked on several occasions to have the Doctors call me they never did. At the meeting they said my husband would receive PT 3 or 4 times a week, well on occasion he did BUT for the first several weeks that consisted of getting out of bed and getting into a wheelchair, and for a lot of those days he was not even gotten out of bed, than he progressed to being put in a wheel chair and taken down a hall and told to scoot his wheelchair back to his room. They also stated at the meeting that their average stay is 25 days, well they got that PLUS After about 4 weeks he was allowed WITH ASSISTANCE to get out of bed and walk 3 or 4 steps to the bathroom to brush his teeth than get back in his wheelchair!! According to the Case Worker Margie on July 7th he was very weak and unable to walk more than a few steps and he needed to go to a skilled nursing facility BUT not the one that we had approved, she said it was not "skilled enough". Margie told me several times that they were NOT a rehab facility that their only job was to get my husband off the massive oxygen he was on, that was done within a week maybe 2. So after 5 weeks we are told that my husband’s insurance would not cover him going to a skilled care facility because he is "walking 40 feet, can dress himself, can use the toilet, and bathe himself with little to no hands-on help". NOW if this is the case WHY has he NOT BATHED himself in the 5 weeks he has been in Select Specialty? WHY did they bathe him LAST WEEK? WHY is he still using a bed side toilet? Why are they still dressing him? So when I spoke to Margie last night she told me I could appeal the insurance decision BUT if he was NOT approved to go to a skilled care facility that we would have to pay out of pocket for their bill for his stay starting the next day!!!! She also said that the insurance company was lying that according to their records my husband could walk 22 feet times 2 with assistance!!! The woman I spoke to at the insurance she was reading what was scanned into their system so why would she lie? PLUS when I spoke to the skilled nursing facility 4 days earlier they has said that the copy they received said the same thing!! When I spoke to the insurance company the person was IMHO honest she said "you can appeal but it will not be reversed because a Doctor said my husband can walk 40 feet etc. that they would not believe us over the Doctor.” NOW my husband is being released today and when he gets home he will have to walk 40 feet to get into the house and our house is NOT wheelchair accessible and in less than 24 hours there is no way I can get a ramp built!! This facility for lack of a better term is a rip off my husband should have been moved once the oxygen level was down if they were not going to do proper PT. PLUS they had my husband fill out a survey on their care while they stood over him making sure he did not give them a negative review!!! Also this facility is not clean looking and at times my husband had to request his sheets be changed. I also do not believe this place was worthy of the 1 star but that is the least I could give them. This place continues to haunt us!!! If you end up there expect to be harassed for payment!! I paid them in full as soon as I had the amount owed and they admit it takes them 21 days after receiving the payment for it so show up in their system but they PROMISE to call weekly till they KNOW they have their payment!!! I am sorry I paid it in full!!! Horrible place from the beginning to the end!!!"
