"My wife and I and a dear friend recently attended a presentation of the play “Heirs of Pretending.” We decided to see the play because one of the actors who works as a waitress at a restaurant that we frequent told us she would be in the play. The Lab Theater Project is a small theater on E. Henderson Ave. in Ybor City that presents new works from emerging playwrights while featuring local talent for actors. We had not heard of the play before and had no great expectations for the production or presentation as it is a small theater with likely a limited budget. Well, were we surprised! The seating was limited, but we entered the first row with the stage right before us. It felt like we were watching the play in our living room. But the best part was that the actors, especially David Malloy, who played Burton Quinn, made you feel like he was the actual character he portrayed. It was as if you were watching a real-life drama instead of just good actors reciting lines. There was an energy and passion in his/their delivery that riveted your attention. None of us expected such professional quality actors/acting in such a small, out-of-the-way place. David Malloy was the character he played and is ready for prime time. Mandy Keen, who played Stephanie Benedict, was also outstanding. However, I am unsure if the character she played offered enough role diversity for her to display her apparent talents. There were a few glimpses of what she might be capable of, and like David Malloy, I believe she could easily assume more complex and demanding roles. The play itself was well-written and engaging. “All” of the actors performed well. The wardrobe left a little to be desired, which is probably not unusual in a small-budget production. Bottom line: it was a very entertaining evening, with the play and actors exceeding our expectations."
"Powerful Performance, the seating places you within tangible distance of the show, leaving you to wonder if, at any moment, the 4th wall will break, and the characters ask about your presence."
"Amazing atmosphere for amazing performances. It's rare to find a theater that strives to be 100% local. I look forward to coming back in the future!"
"They are smart enough to host my art!"
"We attended their Annual Fundraising Event and it was fantastic. Such great talent and excellent story lines. The theater sits about 45~, but with social distancing, they only allowed 10 audience members. Prior to the show, beverage and snacks were available for purchase. Super happy we found this spot on Eventbrite. Looking forward to their future events."
