"This building was the first Publix Super Market. George Jenkins opened it in 1940 after two smaller stores in Winter Haven, the first opening in 1930. What made this a "Super Market" was the many innovations introduced such as air conditioning, frozen food cases, and an automatic front door with an electric eye. See the historic marker photo for more details. The building now houses Saint Matthew Thrift and Gift Store where you can see some of the remaining features on the inside."
