Reviews of USS Spiegel Grove
"A must-see wreck. Had a great time with Horizon and Sielt World Dive shops. They did an amazing job keeping us safe and on track!"
"The Spiegel Grove is a former United States Navy Landing Ship Dock (LSD) that was intentionally sunk in 2002 to create an artificial reef off the coast of Key Largo, Florida. The ship was built in 1955 and was named after President Rutherford B. Hayes' home in Ohio. The Spiegel Grove was primarily used for amphibious operations, and it served in various conflicts, including the Vietnam War and the Gulf War. After being decommissioned in 1989, the Spiegel Grove was initially scheduled to be scrapped. However, efforts to save the ship as an artificial reef gained momentum, and in 2001, the Navy donated the vessel to the state of Florida for that purpose. On May 17, 2002, the Spiegel Grove was sunk in the waters of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, approximately six miles off the coast of Key Largo. The 510-foot ship was intentionally scuttled in an upright position, making it the largest ship ever intentionally sunk to create an artificial reef at the time. Since its sinking, the Spiegel Grove has become a popular dive site for recreational and technical divers alike. The wreck is home to a diverse array of marine life, including schools of fish, barracuda, and sea turtles. The ship has also become a popular spot for underwater photographers and videographers. Overall, the Spiegel Grove is an important piece of maritime history and a unique and popular dive site in the Florida Keys."
