About the Mound Key Archaeological State Park
Mound Key Archaeological State Park is a historic site located in Estero, Florida, United States. The park, framed by mangrove trees, features shell mounds and ridges that rise over 30 feet above the waters of Estero Bay. It was once the ceremonial center of the Calusa Indians, a prehistoric Native American tribe that dominated southwest Florida for over 2,000 years.
Visitors can access Mound Key by boat from Koreshan State Park or Lovers Key State Park. The park has no facilities, but interpretive displays along the trail provide insight into the island's history. Managed by Koreshan State Park, Mound Key offers a unique opportunity to explore the rich cultural heritage of the Calusa Indians.

Reviews of Mound Key Archaeological State Park
"Mound Key is technically still closed after Hurricane Ian but is still accessible by kayaks and paddle board. The dock has been destroyed and the mound key signs were washed away."
"Very cool. Few clues lead you to figure out the entrance and find the trail. Awesome day."
"Kayaked here from Koreshan. Would not recommend for newbie kayakers like myself. Put in at Lover’s Key or somewhere closer. Island was interesting, especially for the history, but was absolutely exhausted by the time I got there and didn’t stay long. Definitely worth a bit of exploration if you aren’t expending a lot of energy to get there."
"Rented a pontoon boat to get there. And it was epic, a narrow channel into the island that was once a channel through it in ancient times makes for a landing perfectly for a pontoon boat. Walking the island was mostly difficult and so we didn't really. But still approaching and landing on the island was a major bucket list on our sailing trip this winter ok Dragon's Lair."
"This is an amazing spot. The entrance is in a hidden little cove that the Indians carved out back in the day. We had two 4 year olds with us that loved the island. We saw tortoises and various other animals along the trails. The island is also partially privately owned. That area is fenced off and you can see wild goats kicking around living the island life. Pretty cool!"
