About the Buford Spring Trailhead
Buford Spring Trailhead is a park located at US-19 in Brooksville, Florida, United States. Most of the refuge is only accessible by boat, but the trailhead provides land base access to the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge. Visitors can hike trails, launch paddle craft, enjoy a sheltered pavilion, and observe wildlife from a two-story tower. Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge protects critical habitat for manatees and serves as a breeding and feeding ground for marine life. The refuge is home to many species of birds and works with others to conserve and protect wildlife and habitats for the benefit of the American people. Reviews of Buford Spring Trailhead
"Well worth the walk! This is a deep sink so stay within your limits and training. It’s easy to go past depth and into the cave section with how large this is on the inside. Go when it hasn’t rained for at least a week and enjoy the crystal clear water."
"Hidden oasis in the middle of a dense forested wetland, Buford Springs initially appears to be a small pond flowing into a creek. A second look at the crystal clear water reveals an opening to a limestone cavern over 160 feet deep. The hike in from the parking lot is about 10 min, we used a rolling cart to bring our scuba gear and tanks. Water temp was between 73-75 degrees F."
"One of my favorite springs in Florida. Definitely worth the drive and making your car dirty. Google maps doesn't take you to there exactly. So you'll have to open the maps and track manually when you get nearby. But basically drive straight and turn right at the fork. Then drive till you see the sign for divers."
"It's a bit of a drive to get to the trailhead but worthwhile for sure. From the parking area, it's a short walk on good trail and boardwalk through beautiful swampland to get to the spring. Amazing place! Bring your bug spray!"
"Was really hoping for that clear view that some of the other reviewers got to see. I didn’t get that, but that’s nature for you! The water was murky and you could not see at all. It was a nice little walk though. It was cool to see the controlled burning going on. mosquitos were pretty awful lol overall I would come back to see if I could see it again. Be careful driving on the dirt roads though! We were driving pretty slow 20-25 mph and a rock still managed to crack my windshield."
