About the HM69 Nike Missile Base
HM69 Nike Missile Base, located on Research Road in Homestead, Florida, is a unique tourist attraction within the Everglades National Park. This historic site, also known as "Alpha Battery," is one of the best-preserved relics of the Cold War era in Florida. Constructed in 1965 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the base was established to protect against a possible air attack from the south following the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Listed on the U.S. Department of the Interior Register of Historic Places, HM69 features three missile barns, a missile assembly building, a guard dog kennel, barracks, two Nike Hercules missiles, and various support elements. Approximately 140 soldiers were stationed at the base to defend against potential threats from Cuba.
Visitors can explore the site during the open house program and Ranger-guided tours, available from early December to late March. The Everglades Institute also offers daily trips to the base as part of their programming. For those interested in supporting the preservation of HM69, the "Friends of Everglades Nike Site" volunteer group welcomes new members.
Don't miss the opportunity to experience a piece of Cold War history at HM69 Nike Missile Base, where the past comes alive in the heart of the Everglades National Park.

Reviews of HM69 Nike Missile Base
"Very interesting historical site in Everglades National Park. Informative and impressive display of photos, diagrams and hardware. Guides freely shared facts, stories and interesting knowledge. Very welcoming, well-run outing and well worth the couple extra miles!"
"Really cool piece of american history that is still sitting exactly how it was when it was first built. Although it's small, it was still informative and the staff on site was very knowledgeable about the history and the people that worked in these buildings during that time. The 1960s. If you like historical sites, this is worth checking out. Keep in mind this is located in a national park so you have to pay the entrance for $35 per car. I made a trip out of it by enjoying most of the park and trials and the missile site."
"Great piece of history here. The volunteers ate knowledgeable and very helpful."
"Ask for Mr Howell as your USPS Guide, he is extremely knowledgeable about the site and truly enjoys giving the story of the Everglades Missile Site and its historical significance."
"What a fantastic history lesson! Tucked away, deep inside the Everglades National Park, you will find this historical Nike Missile base. Dates back to the 1960s. Three missile bunkers in total. They would have contained 6 missiles each. On display is indeed a missile. You get to look at its inner workings, the control panels, photos, maps, and all kinds of relics from the service men & dogs from bygone times. The lovely chaps who work & look after the place are abundant with knowledge. If you have a question, don't be shy, Just ask them. It's free to park and have a look around. They do offer guided tours, but only during December (I think). Thank you so much for looking after this place of history."
