Reviews of The District GastroBar
"At 41 years of age, I had never walked out of an establishment without receiving the food I ordered, until tonight. I booked a table for 5:30pm as we had a show at 7pm. We arrived on time but upon arrival, the host, who I believe is also the manager, could not find my reservation. He was very nice about it and he took a minute to rearrange his reservation schedule and accommodated us with a table. Our server took our drink order right away and the drinks came out pretty quick. When ordering drinks, we also put in an order for an appetizer to share. We then had to wait about 15-20 minutes for the server to come back and take our order right around 5:50. Around 6:15 (45 minutes after our arrival),we asked about our appetizer, which was nothing more than chips and dip, and ordered a second round of drinks. We waited another 10 minutes for the appetizer, and another 15 minutes after that until someone at our party finally got up to grab our watered down drinks that had been sitting at the bar for nearly 20 minutes. At 6:50, still no entrees, at that point we had no choice but to ask for our money back (we paid the check early to be sure we get to our show in time). We received our money back for the food we didn’t received, which I thought was fair, but we were still charged for the gratuities on the entire check, which I didn’t think was very fair but the server didn’t have anything to do with making the food so I didn’t say anything. I’m not asking for anything for free, but looking back I feel like the manager could have offered a little more then just a refund for the food we didn’t get, to make up for the inconvenience of sitting there for 90 minutes and going to a show on an empty stomach. I counted 6 people working in the front of the house and I can only assume at least two more were in the back of the house. If with 8 people on the clock you cannot find a way to serve the 45-50 customers you have in a timely manner, you seriously need to rethink your organization."
"Dined here on a Saturday night after the basketball game. There were about 20 people in the establishment with 4 people working the floor. While I had no complaints (or accolades) about the food (had the black bean tacos and a virgin mojito), the service was simply awful. If you go, be sure to sit at the bar as you will get little attention at the tables. And what really surprised me was the mandatory 20% service charge added to each check, regardless of the party size. I witnessed a couple who sat at the tables and had to get up and walk to the bar to get their drinks, which were sitting at the bar well for 10 minutes. HEY OWNER, tips are not an entitlement. They are EARNED. Also, Florida law considers mandatory service charges to be the property of the employer, not the staff. Are you sharing the mandatory service charges with your employees? Probably can't (according to Revenue Ruling 2012-18) if you have tip pooling. Also, I didn't see disclosure of the mandatory service charge on your web site menu, which is exposing you to a FLSA lawsuit. So, please get it together. If you're going to institute a mandatory service charge, at least ensure that you hire folks who are motivated to provide good service. Otherwise, it feels like greed and deception. I would not recommend this place."
"20% mandatory tip for a single person? I was surprised as usually restaurants apply this on large groups. As far as food, the shrimp and grits were one of the best I've had in Orlando. The next place for me has been in Savannah GA. The truffle fries were good too. Bathroom was clean. I sat at the bar and service was good. Knocked off one star for the 20% mandatory tip but maybe it's necessary in the area it's in?"
"First and last time here. Honestly it was the service that killed it for me. Half of my order was over cooked and I left hungry looking for another brunch spot. We waited so long for drinks and over an hour for our food. Our drink were never refreshed and as long as the bar took we would have waited forever for another drink. There wasn't even alot of ppl in the restaurant either. Apparently, this restaurant supplies for the club next door as well. Everyone who ordered waffles said they were cold. Definitely can't see myself coming back and I love a good brunch spot."
"The rib grilled cheese was awesome, so were the truffle fries. The truffle mac side was nice and hot and fresh, but it could really use more flavor. They have High Noons which is nice. Our waitress was nice and all too, but she didn't tell us it was a 3.75 upcharge from regular fries to truffle tries. And despite all of us paying separate, because we were a large party (9), there was an automatic 20% service charge, otherwise i would've taken 3.75 out of the tip :/"
