Reviews of Karen Patterson Hagerott, PhD, P.A.
"3 minutes seeing your child on a video call. And 7 minutes of testing in the office. This ~brilliant- doctor thats all she needs and she is off to the races pushing a plan on your child. She will ask no hard questions. She will show zero patience. And the test results? Literally no confirmation at all she already had her mind made up."
"We were referred to Dr. Hagerott last year for a neuropsych workup for our son, who was 6 years old at the time and having many serious behavioral struggles across multiple settings that were not remedied by typical means. We suspected he may have ADHD, due to hyperactivity, impulsivity and wildly fluctuating mood swings that impact his social life. It took eight weeks and over $1K to get in with Dr. Hagerott. She does not accept insurance but you can ask for a super bill to submit a claim to your insurance (good luck). Our first appointment was approximately one hour via telehealth. Dr. Hagerott briefly talked with our son, who bounced around the room and reported that he was “making copies of paper airplanes on the printer.” She interacted with him for less than five minutes. From there, we were given forms for parents and teachers to complete and he was scheduled to visit their office for a computerized test. It was another several weeks before we were able to get in for this test. On the day of, I was not allowed to accompany him due to their COVID policy. A lady collected him in the parking lot and took him inside; he returned less than 30 minutes later. He relayed that he was asked to sit at a computer and play a game. We later learned the same lady who escorted him in/out had administered the test. He did not see Dr. Hagerott. Our follow-up was scheduled for January of this year (2023), again via telehealth. To our surprise, according to her data from the computerized test and the forms, our son’s results were negative for ADHD. Her primary diagnosis was anxiety/OCD, ODD and a possible mood disorder, with a differential diagnosis of ADHD. She recommended therapy and possibly anti-anxiety medication, through my current mental health clinician, and she scheduled a follow-up nine months out to check in and see how things were going. We tried him on different anxiety and ADHD medications that made him vacillate between glazed over and rageful, thus we stopped meds and started him in therapy at Adult and Child Mental Health. At the end of his first session, his therapist recommended an evaluation for ASD. They completed the ADOS in August and his results were delivered one week later - ASD Level 2. We are finally able to get him the support therapies he needs. And we are finally able to modify our expectations and know the correct way to respond. We debated keeping our follow up with Dr. Hagerott this month, now that we have an answer. We ultimately decided though to keep it to solicit her feedback on autism resources. When her secretary contacted us minutes before the appointment to collect another $300 payment, we were dubious. I explained that our son had been diagnosed with ASD since our last appointment so really, we just had a few questions for Dr. Hagerott. She immediately became defensive and demanded to know where he had been seen, what type of evaluation had been done and by whom, and how long it took. We told her he had undergone the ADOS and it took just over an hour but was scheduled for two. She responded, “Nope.” I suppose she was insinuating that it must not be accurate as the clinician did not maximize the entire two hours for observation. Needless to say, we declined this $300 appointment. From the moment my son met the clinician who administered his evaluation at Adult and Child Mental Health to the minute he left, he was in full effect - stimming, rattling off facts about the Titanic, etc. Even if she did shorten the schedule a bit - at least she observed him in person and for longer than five minutes. And most importantly, we have a definitive answer and my son is now on the road to getting what he needs. In conclusion, my advice for what it is worth: if you suspect you or your child may be neurodivergent, go to Adult and Child Mental Health. There are two locations, one in Pensacola and one in Pace. ADOS is done at their Pensacola office. They work with insurance and are very thorough, personable and good with children."
"I was essentially told by this psychologist that I would never score over a 20 on the ACT, had an extremely low iq, and basically called stupid (not actually said but implied) rather than mentally disabled. Flash-forward a few years later, I’ve averaged a 3.7 gpa for the last year at Fsu and assist in research studies at a cognitive neuroscience lab at Fsu, all while being a collegiate student athlete :)."
"Dr. Hagerott was the first practitioner to “get” our son. She helped diagnosis him correctly so that we could get the appropriate and correct services. She worked with our family on interventions and recommendations. Thanks to her, our son is graduating with honors, has received several merit scholarships, and will be attending a wonderful university in the fall."
"Dr Hagerott has a true gift. She speaks to my child on his level and truly seems to love her job. She has helped my family immensely. Through all my son's testing and all of the appointments she was friendly and relaxed, made us feel like we "mattered". Would definitely recommend. UPDATE: 6/26/18 I brought my 2nd child to Dr Hagerott for testing. The experience was once again amazing. She thoroughly explains everything and makes sure that you have a clear plan of care after leaving her office. I cannot say enough what a great experience it has been."
