"Our mental health care system is beyond broken and this facility is the closest thing to living in hell… I hope you never end up here because you will be treated like a rat and fed worst than a prisoner. Florida needs to really step it up when it comes to helping those who truly need assistance and mental healing care."
"SHUT THIS PLACE DOWN !!!! HORRIBLE, CRUEL AND UNUSUAL PUNISHMENT happens to patients in this place. I have NO clue how in the world they're STILL allowed to operate this facility. SHAME on the state for not taking this seriously. We ALL have a RIGHTEOUS GOD to stand before one day (believing it or not makes it no less true) we will stand before RIGHTEOUS GOD and give an account for EVERY action and word we have done & spoken. Re I pray the nurse's and doctors REPENT in this place for their actions and treatment of the people placed in their care that they've done wrong. You will Reap what you sow..."
"My smart mouth got me put here; I own that, however, I did not deserve the abuse and neglect directed at me by the staff. I was denied my blood pressure medication; was basically told I was lying about needing the meds because the Sarasota County Sheriff's department and Sarasota Memorial Hospital neglected to log my prescription in my paperwork. A nurse mocked me about it, would not help me contact the Sheriff's Department to verify that they forgot to put my prescriptions in with my belongings (that's another issue). I begged and pleaded for two days for my medication until I passed out. I literally passed out from untreated stage 2 hypertension while in the care of LICENSED MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS IN A STATE-APPROVED MEDICAL FACILITY. They did not transport me to a hospital to receive emergency medical care. I was even mocked by staff because I refused to eat knowing that it would trigger uncontrollable digestive issues, which is much worse for your health than not eating. I was told by a medical professional that when you have IBS, you can eat what you want. I asked what my blood pressure reading was and was sharply screamed at that my blood pressure reading was none of my business when I knew I was in hypertensive crisis and the medical staff were ignoring my symptoms. I was often informed, when asking them if I had the right to my prescription medicine, that I had no rights. I observed the staff screaming at one patient because she gently tapped his shoulder to get his attention; he turned around and bellowed into her face, "DON'T YOU EVER PUT YOUR HANDS ON ME!" He frightened everyone. Of course I've filed a complaint with the State, and I fully expect the state to find no wrongdoing, as is usually the case when people are baker-acted and have no human rights, because ,"they are crazy" is the accepted excuse . Not all the staff were terrible, but most were. An investigator contacted me today, a year after they received my complaint; it triggered a flashback of that nurse jeering at me as I lost consciousness while begging for my blood pressure medication; the nightmares about my experience there just stopped a few months ago, now I will probably experience them again; the Sherrif's department idea is "help" in a crisis is much more damaging than anything you can imagine. I wish I had been charged with a crime; I'd have had more rights and would have received emergency medical care then needed. This facility should be shut down."
"This place was the epitome of disgusting and terrible. The staff was rude and had no compassion whatsoever. Food was not even suitable for a dog. The staff ignored everyone and treated us like animals. It was very uncomfortable sleeping on a thin mattress and having all basic human rights taken away. They would yell at patients who were already obviously in crisis like they were criminals. I wouldn’t even send my dog there for daycare. It was worse than a horror movie and no person should ever have to suffer being there. It was a burden on staff to even get a cup of water. The only light in the whole situation was getting discharged"
"My rooommate was baker acted against their will this weekend and sent to this facility. When we, his only loved ones in town (4 roommates) attempted to visit last night, the nurse in charge (cool leopard-print reading glasses) turned 2 of us away for "inappropriate dress" (wearing shorts in April weather here in South Florida right now, are you kidding me?). The nurse made a show of ogling my roommates up and down their entire bodies INCLUDING REMOVING HER FACE MASK TO LOOK CLOSER? Completely inappropriate and unprofessional behavior during an extremely sensitive and difficult time for our family. The nurse turned two 19-year old women away for the *existence of bare legs* and didn't allow them to see the patient. Horribly cruel and insensitive Puritan bs. In addition to that mess, our roommate was supposed to be discharged this morning, the hospital staff told me they would call me well before 11AM to discuss pick-up. I waited until 11:30AM, called myself, and then all of a sudden he was instantly ready to be released. When I picked him up, NO STAFF were present in the waiting area so the patient was waiting by himself for me, completely unsupervised, and was just allowed to walk out the front door when I arrived. There was no one present to provide us documentation, provide us with an aftercare plan, NOTHING. I have had my fair share of stays in psychiatric hospitals myself and I have NEVER witness such an unsafe and disorganized discharge plan for suicidal patients. My roommate also told me that the same nurse who rudely turned the young women away during our visiting hours last night, was seen this morning verbally berating a patient for crying. I understand that hospitals like these are underfunded & understaffed, and the nurses/orderlies have a very difficult job, but clearly there are people working here who get off on the power trip and control they have over the most vulnerable citizens of our society - innocent people experiencing traumatic mental health crises. F--K THIS PLACE"
