Serving the western region of Polk County, including Lakeland, Kathleen, and Bartow, the school offers alternative educational opportunities for adults. With a main campus at Traviss Technical College and over 30 convenient off-site locations, West Area Adult School provides Adult Basic Education courses for entry into the GED® program. The GED® program, established in 1942, is universally recognized as the equivalent of a traditional high school diploma and has awarded up to 1,500 GED®s each year to graduating students. Courses are offered at a minimal charge of $30.00 per semester for Polk County residents, with day and evening classes available. Additionally, West Area Adult School offers a free pre-school program for full-time adult students with children ages 3 to 5. As an Authorized Pearson VUE Test Center, the school provides high-stakes computer-based certification and licensure exams for various industries. With a mission to prepare adult students for the workforce, West Area Adult School is dedicated to providing relevant learning experiences and is proud to have been listed in The National Register of Historical Places since 1999.

After completing the ESOL program I took the GED classes and in less than a year I earned my high school diploma and received a scholarship to go to college and became a licensed cosmetologist! "WAAS offers a wonderful opportunity for ANYONE to earn their GED and continue their education at the college level...as well as career placement programs ~ Classes are flexible, affordable, and the staff is highly experienced and knowledgeable!There are also multiple locations all around Polk County...including night classes for working adults!!!!!!! I wish more communities had programs like this one!!!!! Highly recommend!!!!"
