"Just wandered in on Saturday at about 11am. They were having Santa for the children and serving a free breakfast to anyone. Got the tour of the last one room, one teacher school in Florida. It was built by local volunteers in the 1920s. Met several locals who were proud but humble of their school and community. Most grew up there and returned or just stayed there all their life. Lots of pictures and farm or ranch tools. Met two firefighters. After a delightful time talking to locals made my way down the road to the fire station. There received a tour and explanation of how things worked by Deigo Hernandez. Knowledgeable and very friendly. Oh, did I mention that he is in a PhD program in physics and drives down from Clewiston to volunteer there. The fire department is an all volunteer district. Amazing day meeting Amazing people. A very giving and caring community that pitch in to help each other."
"It was very exciting to see I never knew Duette had a Historical School. I'm definitely going again."
"Quaint little place"
"It’s pretty cool to see these off-the-beaten-path landmarks. The Duette School was Florida’s last one-room school, built in 1930. It served as a two-teacher elementary and middle school teaching first through eighth grades through 1966 and was a one-teacher school for grades 1-4 thereafter until its closing in 2016. It’s a shame this place finally closed down a few years back, but even far-out places like Duette eventually move on. This marker and building are honestly nothing mind-blowing, but just seeing this place alone is neat in my opinion. With all this being said, it’s obviously not worth driving all the way from a place like Tampa or Fort Myers. If you’re driving past this area though, or if you’re already on a road trip and you’re visiting other places in this area, take a few minutes and stop by!"
"Just at the main entrance to the (now closed) Duette School building itself, right next to the modern sign for the school. Marker has quite a bit of wear to it. I pulled into the school and did a u turn in their parking, to face my car outward to get out and snap a pic / read the sign."
