Reviews of Florida State University Rec SportsPlex
"Ample parking if you are willing to drive a little and walk a little. Clean restrooms. Good Florida turf. Hotter than hot. Bring water, sun screen, chairs, umbrellas, team tents. The taco food truck tonight was excellent."
"Every year we travel to Tallahassee to play in a charity flag football game and this is the field we use. It's always well maintained with clean restrooms and ample parking. One of my favorite events of the year!"
"Under normal circumstances the FSU Rec SportsPlex has plenty of parking and is a great facility. Where it completely fails is when they play host to large tournaments, especially large soccer tournaments. The fields themselves have always been great. We give 5 stars for the fields. However, over the years we have gone there, we have noticed a huge decline in pedestrian safety and accessibility for overflow access from remote lots to the main facility by pedestrians. FSU gets 1 star nowadays for their parking and pedestrian access for overflow parking. There are overflow fields you can park in and walk to the entrance. Traffic can be overwhelming trying to get in and out of the main parking area. The problem is when you walk to the facility. The entire main parking area is surrounded by a large chain link fence like a minimum-security prison. Because of this fencing, FSU forces all pedestrian traffic onto a narrow two-lane road where folks parallel park outside the main parking lot. And trust me, the main lot is small for large tournaments leaving you no choice but to park on the side of the main road or the overflow fields. This creates an extreme hazard for pedestrians as there are no sidewalks. You are forced to walk on the road and contend with vehicle traffic coming in and out of the main entrance. We understand gating off the side parking lot access route only for emergency vehicles as we were told by FSU staff on site. However, they should at least allow pedestrian access from the overflow lots instead of funneling them onto very dangerous road situations. I challenged staff after they told me the gate was for emergency vehicles only. I questioned if they are for emergency vehicles only why is there a bike lock on the gate and will there be someone there in a timely manner to unlock it during an emergency? What made matters worse was by the time you dodged cars and got to the main entrance as a pedestrian, they also had the pedestrian gate to the sidewalk chained off forcing you to once again go onto the main road at the entrance itself and contend with vehicle traffic. This is probably the worst venue to attend for a large tournament in all of Florida because of these safety problems, not because of the fields themselves. We have traveled throughout Florida over the years attending multiple large tournaments and have never encountered such horrible safety issues for pedestrians. To pour salt on the wound, if you do end up parking in the main parking lot and accidentally park in the wrong area, FSU will tow your vehicle. If you do come to a large tournament be careful with the parking and pedestrian situation and plan accordingly."
"The fields were kept in good condition, and the college "volunteers" for my daughter's soccer tournament were attentive and tried to be helpful. Parking is absolutely terrible. Half the entrance/exits were blocked off. This made it confusing on how to get in and out of "parking areas." The marking and directions for the different fields is poor. There could be a simple way of marking fields other than having 3 sets of 1-6 fields. And then have a simple little sign or something at major sidewalk intersections that show which way to go for the different fields. Overall, nice location for events. With some minor (but important) modifications and this field would be 5 stars!"
"It's a great recreational field the only thing that lacks is shade. On a sunny day you will wish for some shade there is a lot of porta johns available since the main restroom can be far away."
