Reviews of US Army Airborne School
"I graduated at the beginning of 2017. Airborne School is the best Army school I've attended in my career so far. The instructors were the most knowledgeable I have ever witnessed in any Army school, and they were highly professional. The way that they could recite entire pages of instruction from memory amazed me. For lodging, the IHG hotel was outstanding. It's a short drive from the Airborne School. That helps with the early mornings during jump week. I'm glad that I didn't have to stay in the barracks, although I would've been fine staying in the barracks. It was a fantastic three weeks that I'll never forget. I'm proud to be airborne and will always cherish my three weeks at Airborne School."
"The training itself is fantastic and will prevent you from being killed from the time you exit an aircraft up until you finally need to conduct a parachute landing fall. The actual training on the towers, lateral drift apparatus, swing landing trainer, etc. is as authentic as can be without actually exiting an aircraft and the cadre who actually instruct are extremely knowledgeable and, for the most part, seem to genuinely care about your safety. Unfortunately, outside of any actual training or instruction, the experience leaves much to be desired. In-processing after arrival on a Friday night was chaotic and confusing with no opportunity to eat dinner. The Sunday after in-processing, I was forced to pack up all of my clothing and gear to move again because I and several others had been placed in the wrong bay. The COVID-19 restrictions and 6 pm curfew are quite laughable as well. All students are confined within a “bubble” and are unable to leave the battalion footprint to go to the PX, Shoppette, Commissary, etc. Students cannot have any outside food or drink, however it is not unusual to see maskless cadre inside the bubble with a delicious looking takeout order within close proximity to students. Mask wearing is strictly enforced for students, with the exception of PRT sessions and jump week when COVID-19 somehow magically disappears. Students are likely to interact with non-instructing cadre who are dealing with anger issues, inadequately treated emotional disorders, possible cases of service-connected reductions in cognitive functioning, and a myriad of other issues. NCO cadre with double digit IQs overly rely on a student chain of command to pass down information regarding timelines, daily uniform requirements, etc. The absolute dumbest rule at this school is the prohibition of watch wearing which forces otherwise functioning adults to rely on a barely grown rotc graduate or cadet to help them manage time. Out-processing after graduation was an absolute nightmare full of conflicting information and instructions from the same double digit IQ cadre. If you are a TDY and return student, try to arrange for transportation and depart the “bubble” immediately after signing out so that you will not be confused with AIT and PCS students."
"I loved going to ft. Benning Ga. For Airborne school. It was the best 3 weeks of my 3 years in the US Army. First week was ground week, second week was tower week, than the third and last week was jump week. We had to make 5 successful with no mistakes jumps. After 5 jumps from a C-130 aircraft is graduation day. I myself wanted blood wings. I was so proud of myself and than it was off to ft. Bragg for my remaining 3 years."
"Roster 208, toe the cables, Black Hats, Airborne shuffle, hit the hole ole man hit the hole, wipe on spit shine guaranteed to pass inspection from the shoe blacks’ work, ground week, 34 ft cables, tower week, jump week...sit on the tarmac awaiting to board the plane, sitting back to back with Doug Lapka... 1st plane ride I was ever on in my life, C141, jumped out that bird and never looked back. Here I sit at near 60. The things I tell the 18 year old I was back then at my age now. Went to Fort Knox yesterday and the old wwii barracks are gone. All that remains, weeds and scrub trees and old roads, weathered by time. I am heading to fort Benning soon to look at Sand Hill and those towers one more time. Gonna head down to HAAF and see that place and circle back to Fort Campbell then home. Call if a pilgrimage because that is exactly what it is. Enjoy life, keep God First in all you do...My wings are 4 decades old, 1978."
"Cadre make feel safe and Sergeant Airborne Pafford is the funniest NCO I have ever meet and he gives you the motivation to keep going. Sergeant Airborne Longmire gives you confidence that you will jump and land properly."
