"Talked for a while on the phone with the instructor about diving. I asked if during pool training he’d communicate if physical contact was required. That’s where he became very defensive and unprofessional. “With the questions you’re asking you sound like you’ve been molested or something”. I said I didn’t understand why he’s getting defensive by my question. “I just ask that I don’t pay for what it sounds like you’ve been through”. Which then offended me more because all I’m asking is when starting off, in the pool or before our first official dive, what situations may we encounter physical contact and if there’s portions of training that are more hands on can you brief me prior until I get to know you or atleast a proper understanding of situations where you’d be hands on with me during training. Fully understanding that emergency situations or certain training situations require contact. “Wow out of over 4000 students you’re the first I’ve ever had ask questions like this.” I explained it’s not an issue as long as there’s good communication at the beginning of pool training and that I didn’t appreciate the comment about I must have been molested or something. He was like “well I just call it how it is”. He seems very experienced and knowledgeable but clearly this is a touchy question/subject for him when all he has to say was “sure day one I can go over different situations where we might need to be more hands on with each other. It’s important that you’re comfortable before we hit the lakes or ocean” instead of trying to embarrass me for asking. He mentioned a guy that quit diving with him after touching his hand in the water which felt like he was treating me like by asking this question I’m going to overreact in a situation that requires contact which isn’t the case. What pisses me off is women shouldn’t be treated like they’re the bad guy for just asking for open communication. It is NORMAL for people to request open communication regarding physical contact on day one or two of training when situations allow because you’re getting into something new with someone you don’t know. Good instructors are understanding and have no issue with communicating in pool training or briefing you before your dive that if you’re messing up they’ll swim over you physically help…. Understandable. I’ve never done diving training so I did not know. I can’t speak to his course but I can say for someone to tell me diving might not be for me if I have an issue with physical contact all because I want to know if I can get a heads up in the pool when we first start working together. I won’t be taking his course. Instructors should be comfortable with these questions, he’s the first I’ve ever had who’s responded this way, and to make someone feel bad or singled out by saying I’m the only person to ask this out of 4k students or to cross a line and say I must have been molested is bs. Learn how to talk to women. He was cool and I was seconds away from taking the course until the end when I asked that. Glad this part of the conversation was had before swiping my card. I do skydiving and pilot training which involves a lot of contact. No issue with other instructors when I just ask for a heads up on physical contact when first getting into a new sport/hobby the first time or two. Pilot instructors often touch my leg when they have to reach across the dashboard which isn’t a big deal because my instructor gave me a heads up the first flight since it’s a tiny space. My skydiving instructors are hands on when checking my harness and it just took him saying “hey I’m going to check your harness” for me to say no problem. I’ve never been in an emergency situation and felt like oh no they made physical contact, more like thank you for jumping in. Underwater they can’t give you a heads up but he can simply say hey these are situations I may approach you for physical contact to do A B and C. Ok understandable because now I know. Just was asking for communication starting off so I understood how this worked. This instructor is a no for me."
