South Forsyth Middle School

"I've spent 2.5 years at this school, so I am going to share my opinion on what it was like. 6th Grade: This was my best by far. Not too many jocks(maybe a few). Not to easy/hard amounts of work and a fun year! 7th Grade: There are two sides to this grade: very good & absolute garbage. I had the mix. Some teachers are actually really fun to have! Others... not so much. The only subject I found difficult was ELA. 8th Grade: This grade is what made me give it the rating I did & I can describe it with 2 words: absolute dictatorship. To be fair though its not really the classes that make it bad. It's the complete lack of ANY freedom to do anything. Some classes, we get in trouble if we have our phone IN THE ROOM.This isn't the worst of it though(I know this is boring to read, but just keep with me). Between classes, before, & after school. Before school: This part is just absurd. If you ride the bus, then once you get to school, you will go the the bleachers in the gym and sit there... that's it. No phones are allowed for some unearthly reason. So you either talk to someone, do work, or read... If you don't have anyone to talk to, then sorry, your outta luck! If you are caught with your phone then they take it and you cant get it back until your dismissed to first period. Between classes: You get 4 minutes and 4 minutes only. During this time, you must go to your locker, get your stuff for the next class, and use the restroom(if you have to). Not much to say except I think it should be 5 minutes for extra measures. After School: School ends at 4:15, but if you ride the bus home then you don't get home until 5ish. They call walkers immediately at 4:15, car riders at 4:20, and buses at 4:25. When you are waiting for your transportation, you must be in your class at all times, some teachers don't even let you talk. I wish this school started earlier so we could get home earlier too. Staff The staff such as janitors, teachers and coaches aren't actually half bad(sometimes). Some 8th grade teachers give you lots of homework, and can be very rude, as if they're somehow a more superior human than us students. Connections: Each student has 2 random connections built into their schedule, so here's what i think of each of them. PE: Not horrible and can be fun sometimes, but you just do 35 minutes of warm ups and 10 minutes of actual activities. Other than that its pretty good. Engineering/Innovation/Tech: Easy to get behind, but other than that it's pretty good! Business and Comp. Science: Easy but boring.... Marketing: Was good, but when the new teacher moved in.... Health:Easy, Chill, Fun, somewhat disturbing.... its pretty nice. Art/Speech & Debate/:Haven't had it so... yeah. Principal:Built a pyramid and put herself on top. She sacrifices ANYTHING(including relationships, emotions, and freedom) to make sure that we get out dose of education. Summary: This school sacrifices anything and everything to make sure it keeps its blue ribbon.1/5 for a reason. River watch is better at almost everything. 1 word: Prison"

"band is the only good thing about this school. The pizza is as stale as 17 week old bread and has random dry junk hanging off of the dough of anything edible you serve"

"SFMS is a fantastic school. All 3 of my children have attended here. I cannot speak more highly of the teachers and administration. Ms. Tinsley is a great principal and leader. The quality of education is outstanding. The music department is top notch. 2 of my children have special needs. They were guided and supported through every year of middle school very successfully. I would recommend SFMS over ANY middle school in Forsyth County."

"For a student who usually gets A's and B's and does what they're told, SFMS is okay. It is neither bad nor great. When you look at test scores for the state, sfms is #1, but I do not believe that reflects the actual learning experience of the students. I have seen multiple cases in which students that needed extra support or had behavior issues, and thier situation was not properly handled. I've seen children yelled by teachers and administration, when they could've sat down and calmly spoke to them. I'm not saying it's bad to discipline students, but yelling at them is not the right way to do it. It is not a positive environment for students, and sfms does not encourage "wanting to learn". I do not recommend this school to children with specific needs, administration will not help your child succeed."

"Tips: If someone clogged the bathroom sink and left it running, you can risk turning it off, but going somewhere else may be the best option. Advanced 6th grade classes are what you want. Don't let a coach push you around. Don't put a pencil in the locking mechanism... just don't. Teachers don't bite. It's always good to treat them like they won't. The vending machines are only there to drive you mad. That's about it. Have a good time!"
