Reviews of Odyssey Charter School
"My child went here for less than a year and we removed her after that. The only reason we didn't pull her out earlier was because of her teacher. She had such a fantastic teacher who we really loved. The downsides of the school are far too great to outweigh the good. It is a very run down building. They are clearly out of space, as everything from the hallways to the classrooms are crowded. The classes are smaller overall, but you can still have 20 kids in a classroom. For example, there were two kindergarten classes, each with approximately 20 students. The building almost looked in disarray...holes in the ceiling throughout and frequently trying to do repairs to keep up. The outside area is deplorable, as it sits amongst multiple trucking companies. There are no good green areas for the kids to play in. Their open "field" has far too much dirt and not enough grass. I counted too many times when the front door was left unlocked and no staff monitoring the entrance. Even a few times, the side doors were left unlocked and unattended. I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt, but in the end, my child's education came first and we had to remove her. This school needs to realize that they need a better space. They are out of space and in a crumbling building. Time to make some drastic changes to improve the infrastructure or just throw in the towel."
"Odyssey has very poor leadership and has declined greatly in the past three years. The teachers have very poor classroom management skills. They have had three vice principals in two years. Teachers spend times on their phone and not properly monitoring the class. Both of my children went there. It is sad the State Charter School Association woudl continue to allow a school like this to remain operational."
"I am so thankful for Odyssey Charter School and how my child has thrived there. He was at a wonderful, well-respected, private school but it wasn't the right fit for him personally. He has stated that Odyssey is a better choice of school for him. I love that they have after school care available for all grades K-8 and teaching assistants (paraprofessionals) in all classes in grades K-5. There are many opportunities to get involved and volunteer which is important to me as a parent. Being a smaller school, I know most of the staff, and most of them know who I am. I have also met many of the other parents through PTO and school activities. Our family is very happy with our choice to transfer into Odyssey."
"Things we love about Odyssey, from our experience: the atmosphere and feeling of family and community; teachers and staff know our daughter and look out for her every day-she is not just a face in a crowd of students; parents are welcome and invited to volunteer, to participate in the educational process, to have a voice; opportunity to go on educational field trips to Washington DC, Tennessee Aquarium, National Weather Service, Savannah, etc.; extremely dedicated staff and faculty; awesome family and community events; every student gets the attention they need to succeed; and much more. No school is perfect in every way and Odyssey is no exception. But in the ways that count as far as the education our child is getting, we are very pleased."
