Marshall University: Holderby Hall
About the Business
Holderby Hall at Marshall University, originally known as South Hall, is a nine-story building located on Fifth Avenue in Huntington, West Virginia. The building houses coed residence wings and a cafeteria, making it a hub for student life on campus. Named after James Holderby, who sold his farm to establish Marshall Academy in 1837, Holderby Hall has been a central part of the university since its construction in 1963. The building was later enlarged in 1968-69 to accommodate the growing student population. As one of the iconic buildings on campus, Holderby Hall serves as a reminder of Marshall University's rich history and commitment to providing quality education to its students.

"DO NOT LIVE HERE. Holderby has no air conditioner so get ready to sweat off your hooo haaaa. I lived on the 8th floor and it was ridiculously hot, to the point where I slept without clothes and with just a sheet. BUGS were a huge problem. It was either leave your window closed and die of a heat stroke or open your window and have bugs from every family become your new roommate. There was also bugs flying everywhere throughout the hallways and bathrooms because they would crack open the windows and the exit doors for AIR. During the winter, they have heat but THEY CONTROL THE HEAT AND TEMPERATURE. Most of the time I would get too hot and have to crack my window as much as it allows (about 6 inches) just to breathe. It's was a constant sauna. I will never ever stay there again. Good luck to those who stayed this year and may God be with you."
"Best of all the Marshall University dorms. The D. C. Michelle Tobey is the most kind and awesome person you will ever meet."
"Lived in Holderby for 2 years straight and loved it. It's really quiet and staff are very nice and friendly. No a/c sucks sometimes but I kept my windows open year-round and use fans which keeps it reasonable. Worst months as far as heat are August, Sept, late April and May so be ready!"
"Too expensive for having no air. There is no air conditioning whatsoever and I am miserable. Paying way too much for this. And still Marshall University can spend one million dollars to renovate the AC in the hallways (!!) of another dorm building, but can't even put air in our study lounges. It's only redeeming qualities are single rooms and incredibly nice staff but I honestly don't know if it's worth it at this point. UPDATE: now that's it cold, I actually really like staying here. But I still hate that I'm paying over $6,000 to stay in a room where I can't control the air or even the heat."
"The cheapest dorm to live in. No A/C and limited heating. I enjoyed my time living here, everyone is extremely nice."
