Cwvcaa Head Start

CWVCAA Head Start is a federally funded program located at RR 1 Box 302A in Shinnston, West Virginia, United States. Our primary concern is the health and safety of our children, families, and staff, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. We follow CDC recommendations and take all necessary precautions to ensure a safe learning environment.

Our Head Start program, established in 1965, provides children aged 3-5 with a solid foundation for their growth and development. We offer learning and developmental services at no cost to families, with eligibility based on family income. Children from various backgrounds, including those in foster care or receiving public assistance, are eligible to enroll.

With six standalone facilities and collaborations in several elementary school classrooms across Gilmer, Harrison, Lewis, and Ritchie counties, we aim to prepare children for success in school and life. Our curriculum focuses on social-emotional, physical, language, and cognitive development through child-initiated and adult-directed activities.

Outdoor play is an essential part of our program, with daily outdoor time for children to run, jump, and develop strong muscles. We also prioritize parent involvement, offering home visits, progress monitoring, and parent-teacher conferences throughout the year.

Each classroom has a limited number of children to ensure maximum engagement and learning opportunities. Daily schedules include small group activities, read-aloud sessions, outdoor play, art, snack time, and nutritious meals. Transportation is provided, and classroom hours are from 8:15am to 2:45pm, Monday to Friday.
