"Friendly relaxed atmosphere. Great care. Fun place to learn."
"I've spent a lot of time thinking and praying before writing this review. My children (two daughters, ages 10 and 6) have been riding horses at KTR Farms for several years and, just this year, we invested in leasing a horse from the farm—and doing more shows. My oldest daughter even registered to join KTR’s IEA team. We started lessons years ago under trainer Melissa, who we love, and continued with the trainer, Rachel. We originally started riding horses as a form of therapy for my oldest daughter, who was diagnosed with ADHD and generalized anxiety disorder. Although she struggles in some areas and is far from perfect, she has a unique connection and bond with animals that we work hard to foster. As we attended weekly lessons at KTR (more regularly this year), I started to notice that my child was continually getting in trouble while at the farm. She would get in the car after many lessons feeling defeated and discouraged. She would say, “Mommy, I just can’t do anything right.” While I always supported what Keri (the farm owner) and Rachel (trainer) said to guide my children, I started to feel dissatisfied with the way that my children were spoken to at times, especially my oldest. Coming to the farm for our family started to feel stressful versus enjoyable. Sadly, we ultimately decided to leave the farm after an episode when Keri, the farm owner, disciplined my oldest daughter. During my youngest daughter's lesson, my oldest daughter fed the barn cats “because they seemed hungry.” While she should not have done this without permission, I did not approve of the way that my daughter was spoken to, or I was spoken to, regarding the issue. My daughter sincerely meant well and was sobbing in my shirt as Keri continually berated her in front of me. Since we had two months left on our leasing contract, I sent approx. $1500 to end our relationship with the farm. Instead of apologizing or working with us, we received a text from Keri and Rachel wanting more money. It was less about my child’s heart and more about the grand total. The last communication we had was the farm was picking up our tack and me sharing two articles on ADHD with Keri and Rachel to help them better understand children whose brains work differently. No love, compassion, or care was shown for our family and our children. In summary and the reason for sharing our experience, is that I would only recommend KTR Farms for older children who are focused on winning shows. For this, it is a great place. However, if you are a family who wants to ride for enjoyment, or especially a family who has special needs children that require great patience, I would absolutely look elsewhere. We are now at another farm that has handled my children in a totally different way, and both girls are THRIVING. The farm is better staffed and both my children have lessons at the same time. We are now loving our farm days. My oldest has progressed more in a month than she did in a year prior given a more positive, understanding, and supportive approach. I hope this helps another family in making an informed decision."
